Coronavirus has not been very kind to the football fans and players. The pandemic has spread out across the globe and has severely affected the football action.
People who were relying on the football over weekends for their enjoyment have been affected on a larger scale, as there are no major leagues happening across the globe.
Just 10 weeks of football happened across the globe before the COVID-19 pandemic hit the sport and its economy hard. Moreover, this raises two major questions for every fan of the Beautiful game.
If the first is what will happen to the leagues across Europe, the second one will be regarding the prestigious Ballon d’Or award.
With the chances of football returning back to action looking seemingly difficult, the season might be ended prematurely. The premature act will also have an impact on the individual trophies given for the performances of players.
May it be the ‘Golden Boot’ or ‘Golden Glove’ of the Premier League or the Ballon d’Or for the best footballer in the world. Only two months have been played in the football and the other international engagements have been postponed.
If the football does not resume this season, here is how the Ballon d’Or Rankings may look like:
1) Robert Lewandowski ( Poland)
It is very surprising to see the name of Polish striker Robert Lewandowski on top of the list. However, the Bayern Munich striker has been in top form dismantling opposition throughout the season through his fantastic scoring ability. The player has been able to control the turbulence in the initial months of the season when Bayern slipped to the fifth position.
The 31-year old striker has been a major force in Bayern’s title challenge this season. Apart from topping league charts with 25 goals, the player has nine goals and three assists to his name this season. Can this be enough to top the Ballon d’Or Rankings if the further season isn’t played?
2) Kylian Mbappe (France)
The French international is still very young but a player with an eye for scoring goals. Despite being young, the player has shown maturity using his experience to carry the team on the heads when the senior players could not play owing to injury or suspensions.
If the season resumes, PSG has a good chance to win the champions league with both Mbappe and Neymar in top form. If that happens, He could well see himself and Neymar competing for the number 1 spot.
In the two-three months of football played in 2020, the Paris born player has 13 goals and nine assists to his name apart from 18 Ligue 1 goals throughout the season. Can the French player go all the way to the prestigious Ballon d’Or trophy?
3) Neymar Jr. (Brazil)
The 28-year-old winger and attacker has got back the mojo off late and is posing the real threat to his other contenders. The costliest player of the world is linked with a move to Real Madrid and Barcelona in the summer transfer window owing to his strong performances.
For the first time in his tenure at Parc des Princes, Neymar has achieved the purpose for which the club broke the bank. The Brazilian international has successfully taken the Paris based outfit to the last 8 of Champions League which the club had failed to achieve. In 2020, the player has nine goals and four assists to his name. The only question remains is can he take PSG all the way in the elite European competition?
4) Cristiano Ronaldo ( Portugal)
The Juventus ace didn’t have the best of the start to the 2019-20 season. However, the Portuguese had hit the form in December, scoring in 11 consecutive games.
Being in the sixth gear in the early months of 2020, the player had scored 13 goals and was involved indirectly in two more for Bianconeri. If the season ends here and there is no football in 2020, can these credentials help Ronaldo to gain the lost territory?
5) Lionel Messi (Argentina)
It is quite difficult to see the Argentine being ranked below Lewandowski and Mbappe apart from being ranked below his arch-rival, Cristiano Ronaldo. However, these won’t hinder the Argentine living legend fighting for the honour for the seventh time.
Being one of the main reason behind Barcelona’s title chase, Lionel Messi has topped the charts of the Spanish top tier. In 2020, the Argentina international has nine goals and seven assists to his name. Can this be enough to tilt the trophy once again to his name? Or is it the time for fans to see the new winner?
It will be very disheartening if further games are not played this year. We hope the world recovers fast and football fans get to see some action.
