Amol Muzumdar wants India Women to build on World Cup success and dominate world cricket

The Indian women’s cricket team has already created history in the last few years. Under Amol Muzumdar, they lifted their first ODI World Cup in November 2025, beating South Africa in Navi Mumbai. For most sides, that would be the peak but for Muzumdar, it is only the beginning. Speaking at a Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai event on Saturday, the head coach laid out a clear and ambitious vision. He does not want the Women in Blue merely to win big tournaments. He wants them to dominate world cricket.

“Two years down the line, if they start dominating world cricket. Dominance is something that we have always spoken about within the squad. Being ruthless on the ground is another thing that we have always maintained,” Muzumdar said.

The former Mumbai batter, who grew up in the hard school of Ranji Trophy cricket, sees the same values in this side. “Obviously, from the background where I come from, my growth in Mumbai cricket was kind of similar. I try to inculcate those things, or give it back. If we start dominating world cricket, I would be happy,” he added.

Amol Muzumdar backs India’s next generation to take women’s cricket forward

Amol Muzumdar is also excited about the talent pipeline. He believes a specialist T20 squad, similar to the Indian men’s team, is not far away. “We’re already on that path. There is some amazing talent coming through. The talent I’ve seen at the CoE, where they hold the India Under-15 and U-19 camps, is terrific,” he said. The young players, he noted, understand nutrition, fitness and fielding in a way previous generations took years to learn. “They are professionals. Even the U-15 players are professionals. You’ll soon find that when the younger generation takes over, India will be in a good state.” he added.

With Smriti Mandhana now the captain of the Indian team after Harmanpreet Kaur’s long tenure, the team is in transition. Despite that the core message remains the same. Unity in the dressing room, relentless intensity on the field, and a hunger to dominate rather than merely compete. Muzumdar took charge in October 2023 and in three years he has helped turn a talented side into world champions. Now he wants them to become a force that other teams fear every time they walk out.
