Spanish football was left in mourning on Tuesday after CD Tenerife confirmed the death of forward Jesus de Miguel Alameda, who passed away at the age of 30 following a devastating collision during Monday’s Segunda Division match against FC Andorra. The tragedy unfolded in the seventh minute of stoppage time at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez Lopez in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. With the score locked at 2-2, De Miguel chased a long ball near the halfway line in an attempt to launch a counter-attack.
Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono raced out of his area and collided heavily with the striker, striking him in the chest with his knee. De Miguel collapsed motionless on the pitch. Medical staff treated him for several minutes as players from both sides looked on in distress. Owono was shown a straight red card, and the match was abandoned.
Tenerife confirm De Miguel’s death after condition deteriorates in hospital
De Miguel suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest. Paramedics restored his pulse in the ambulance en route to the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, where he was admitted to intensive care. The club initially reported that he was stable within the seriousness of the situation and breathing independently, though still unconscious. Overnight, his condition deteriorated neurologically. On Tuesday morning, Tenerife announced he had died at 8:00 a.m. local time.
In a deeply emotional statement, the club said: “Broken with pain, with a lump in our throat and unable to believe that this is true. There are no words of consolation.” The club stood with De Miguel’s family, who thanked supporters for their messages and asked for privacy during this terrible time. Spanish police have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the death, with prosecutors also involved, examining the possibility of involuntary manslaughter. Tributes poured in from across Spanish football, with clubs and players expressing their shock and solidarity.
