Karim Benzema’s proposed departure from Al-Hilal has reportedly become far more complicated than a normal transfer negotiation. The French star is seeking to leave the Saudi club and become a free agent, but discussions over terminating his contract have reportedly involved more than Al-Hilal’s management. Reports say part of his financial package is connected to the Saudi Pro League and national authorities, meaning the club cannot independently finalise his exit. The former Ballon d’Or winner reportedly wants his final year’s salary to be paid in full before agreeing to leave.
The situation is being described as political because Benzema is not simply an ordinary foreign player within the Saudi football system. His move to Saudi Arabia was part of the country’s wider strategy of attracting globally recognised football stars and raising the international profile of its league. The Saudi Pro League is backed by significant state-linked investment, while the Public Investment Fund owns several major clubs, including Al-Hilal. Benzema’s departure therefore involves wider considerations around the league’s image, finances and agreements with authorities. Al-Hilal are reportedly already considering replacements, including Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins. However, until the contractual and financial issues are resolved, the French forward’s next move remains uncertain.

“We need to improve”: Ruben Neves warns Al-Hilal after winning start in Saudi Pro League
Al Hilal began their 2026-27 Saudi Pro League campaign with a 4-2 victory over newly promoted Al Faisaly at the Kingdom Arena. Karim Benzema opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 19th minute, giving Simone Inzaghi’s side an early advantage. Malcom doubled the lead seven minutes later before Ruben Neves converted another penalty to make it 3-0. Al Hilal appeared completely in control at half-time, but the visitors produced a spirited response after the break. Alexandre Mendy and Theo Bongonda scored within five minutes of each other to reduce the deficit to 3-2 and put pressure on the hosts.
The Portuguese midfielder eventually settled the contest in the 88th minute by converting his second penalty of the evening. Neves was subsequently named Player of the Match after his brace helped Al Hilal survive a difficult second half. Despite the victory, the experienced midfielder admitted that his team needed to improve. “First 45 minutes, we just controlled all the game. Second half, we dropped a little bit the quality, we dropped a little bit the focus, and in this league, it’s not allowed anymore.” He added, “We need to improve. We cannot concede two goals playing at home, winning 3-0, controlling all the game.” The result gives Al Hilal three points from their opening fixture and an encouraging start under Inzaghi.
