Former England captain Michael Vaughan has warned that Stephen Fleming, who recently took charge as England Test coach, will find international cricket a lot different than his very successful stint with Chennai Super Kings. Vaughan felt that Fleming will miss the presence of MS Dhoni and the rest of the support staff of CSK, including Eric Simons, the bowling coach, after taking over from Brendon McCullum. All the five trophies of Fleming in IPL have been achieved under the captaincy of Dhoni, where Dhoni was the mastermind of the team, whereas Fleming was responsible for managing the players.
Vaughan described Fleming as one of the game’s most respected coaches but questioned whether he would enjoy the same support system in England. Writing in The Telegraph, he said, “Fleming is very well respected, renowned for being a very good manager and tactician. I’ve seen him at the IPL and one of the problems he might discover in English cricket is that we do not have an MS Dhoni to be his captain.”

Vaughan emphasizes that for any new coach, visiting iconic venues like Edgbaston, where Ashes Tests take place, connecting with county coaches, and diving deeper into England’s domestic setup are crucial yet often overlooked steps. He pointed out that during Brendon McCullum’s time, England missed out on many of these finer details, which are vital for clinching major trophies. Vaughan also mentioned that England seemed to accept Fleming’s preferred timeline, even though there was stiff competition for the position after Andy Flower declined the offer.
