Australia Could Host First-Ever IPL Match as CA Extends Invitation to BCCI: Report

The idea of taking the IPL global is buzzing again, especially with recent news that Australia might host an Indian Premier League match in the next few years. This comes on the heels of the announcement about a Big Bash League game set to take place in Chennai, which opens the door for a two-way exchange between these two massive T20 leagues. Reports indicate that Cricket Australia has sent an “open invitation” to the BCCI to bring an IPL game down under, and they’re optimistic that this proposal will gain traction. Additionally, it seems there are private talks happening, with CA aiming to make the BBL opener in Chennai a regular fixture. The roadmap for India and Australia also includes a Youth Sports Festival, aimed at strengthening their sporting connections and fostering more interaction among young athletes from both nations.

According to a report by The Sydney Morning Herald, an IPL match could soon be played in Australia if the BCCI agrees to Cricket Australia’s proposal. The Australian board is also pushing to turn the BBL’s Chennai opener into a regular fixture in future seasons. While no official confirmation has been made by either board, the discussions signal growing cooperation between two of cricket’s biggest markets.

Big Bash League to Begin Overseas Journey in Chennai

Australia’s top T20 competition is set to make history with the start of the 2026-27 Big Bash League season in India. On December 12, the Melbourne Renegades will take on the defending champions, the Perth Scorchers, at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium. This match will not only be the first official BBL game held outside of Australia but also the inaugural overseas franchise league match to take place in India.

The exciting announcement was made by Modi and Albanese during the Australian Prime Minister’s visit, with both leaders emphasizing the strengthening sporting ties between the two nations. At the MCG, Modi expressed that cricket is a common passion that unites the people of India and Australia, transcending the boundaries of the game. This match is anticipated to be the highlight of the “G’Day Namaste” celebrations in India and could pave the way for future partnerships, including the potential for an IPL game to be hosted in Australia for the very first time.

Cricket Australia sees this as a fantastic chance to broaden the BBL’s appeal in one of the largest cricket markets in the world. The league already has a broadcasting deal in India that extends until 2030, and officials are optimistic that the Chennai match will draw large crowds, even without the presence of an Indian franchise.
