Shreyas Iyer Takes Charge as India Reveal Squad for England and Ireland Tour

With Shreyas Iyer at the helm, India has begun a new era of T20I cricket ahead of their upcoming tour of Ireland and England. The 31-year-old batter, who is noted for his excellent leadership abilities in the IPL, will lead the Indian team in place of former captain Suryakumar Yadav as announced by the BCCI. The selected team also includes Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old batting star who has made his mark in the team owing to his record-breaking performance in the IPL.

The chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar expressed his faith in Iyer as captain as he said, “With regards to Shreyas, obviously we’ve seen what he’s done over the last few years, leading different franchises. He’s won one and reached finals as well, and probably had a tougher season this year after a great start. So we’ve seen everything that a captain possibly can.”

Commenting on the rationale behind selecting Iyer as captain, BCCI Chairman of the Selection Committee, Ajit Agarkar, stated that Iyer had shown commendable leadership skills and batting abilities over the years. The selectors have chosen Iyer since he has already gone through various challenges of captaincy and has proven himself in the T20 format. Moreover, it seems that the selectors are making an important selection keeping in view the upcoming T20 World Cup and Los Angeles Olympic Games scheduled for 2028.

India’s T20I Squad: Captaincy Change, New Faces and Key Changes

Selectors Back Iyer’s Leadership Record

Iyer returns to India’s T20I setup after a long absence, but his recent achievements made him difficult to ignore. He led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and guided both Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to IPL finals. His batting numbers were equally impressive, scoring 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07 in IPL 2025 and 498 runs at 168.81 in IPL 2026. The selectors believe his experience and form make him the right choice to lead India into the next major tournament cycle.

Suryakumar Misses Out Despite T20 World Cup 2026 Success

The main point of discussion is the exclusion of Suryakumar Yadav from the squad. Even though he led India to victory in the T20 World Cup early this year, the team’s selectors have decided to look for better options in view of a dip in form. In nine innings at the World Cup, he scored 242 runs at a strike rate of 136.72. Meanwhile, his overall performance in the IPL 2026 tournament has been less than satisfactory, scoring 270 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 147.54. With the next T20 World Cup still two years away, selectors opted to invest in a younger core.

Sooryavanshi Gets Maiden India Call-Up

The journey of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been very impressive. Just 15 years old, he has made it to the Indian men’s team at such a tender age after Sachin Tendulkar’s time. In the IPL 2026, he was unstoppable, scoring 776 runs with a magnificent strike rate of 237.30. Not only this, but he has taken away the Orange Cap as well as being the Man of the Series in the league. Prior to playing for the main team, he will play for India A in Sri Lanka. If he debuts on the tour, he will become India’s youngest men’s international cricketer.

Hardik and Bumrah Given a Break

India will travel without Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah. Hardik is currently completing rehabilitation and awaits final fitness clearance before returning to action. Bumrah, meanwhile, has been rested as part of workload management plans. With important Test and ODI assignments ahead, the team management wants to carefully manage his workload. Their absence has opened opportunities for players such as Nitish Kumar Reddy and Prince Yadav, both of whom have been rewarded for recent performances.
