Iyer has developed his reputation on the basis of timing, composure and comebacks. He has led his franchise sides to final appearances in IPL, and has become India’s go-to middle-order batsman in white-ball cricket even when dealing with injuries and contractual issues along the way. These achievements have been backed by stats too. Iyer’s performances in ODIs have been impressive, and he has played some quality innings in Test cricket as well. In T20 leagues, Iyer has been a consistent performer, and his latest unbeaten knock of 101 against Lucknow Super Giants for Punjab Kings reiterated his qualities of an innings-winning player. More significantly, Shreyas Iyer’s career has been built on the foundation of resilience, leadership, and game-playing abilities.
Iyer recovered from losing form due to injuries and contract issues to prove himself in the international arena and lead franchise teams to the finals of IPL, and by March 2026, Iyer’s performance stats across formats had made him one of the best middle-order batsmen of India’s present era.
ODI Career
This form of cricket has enabled Iyer to perform at his best. He has scored 2,977 runs in 76 matches in ODIs, with an impressive average of 46.51 and strike rate of 99. The batsman’s career stats also reveal five centuries and 23 half-centuries. Iyer took his game to the next level in the 2023 ODI World Cup where he aggregated 530 runs, with two centuries, including 105 off 63 deliveries against New Zealand in the semi-finals.
Moreover, Iyer sustained his form in the 2025 Champions Trophy as well where he became the top scorer for India with 243 runs. Iyer’s capacity to target spinners and rotate strikes have made him a dependable player in number four position. Also, he features among the players with the lowest number of ducks in ODI cricket.
Test Career
Iyer’s Test journey started in style. He scored 105 and 65 against New Zealand on debut in 2021 and became the first Indian batter to register both a century and a fifty in his maiden Test. Across 14 Tests, he has made 811 runs at an average of 36.86, including one hundred and five fifties.
However, recurring back injuries disrupted his progress in red-ball cricket. His struggles in overseas conditions also drew attention after the South Africa tour in 2024. Still, selectors continue to value his spin game and counter-attacking approach in Asian conditions. When fully fit, Iyer remains an option capable of shifting momentum quickly in the longest format.
T20I Career
While playing the T20 Internationals, Iyer has been the steady hand in the middle order while also keeping the run-scoring rate going at all times. His T20I stats include scoring 1,104 runs in 51 matches at a strike rate of over 136. This is highlighted by the fact that he has 8 fifties to his name, with a top score of 74 not out.
Despite having to come in and out of the side due to the competition in the middle order, Iyer has always managed to make a mark on the game with his contributions. In fact, his performances earlier in 2022 have led to the selection of the player of the month by the ICC.
IPL Career
Runs scoring and leadership ability have marked the IPL career of Iyer. He has scored 4,229 runs at an average of 35.83 and a strike rate of 136.72 in 147 matches in the league. Later on, he captained Kolkata Knight Riders to win the championship in 2024 and reached IPL final with Punjab Kings in 2025 after becoming one of the costliest players of the IPL at INR 26.75 crore. He became the first captain of IPL who has taken three franchises to the IPL finals.
