In an era when the dynamics of T20 cricket have undergone a drastic change with regards to their fast starts, KL Rahul has laid down his cards. As the opening batsman for the Delhi Capitals in the upcoming season of IPL 2026, Rahul is altering his batting philosophy. While the player had been known in the past for anchoring innings and stabilizing them, he now perceives the powerplay as the deciding factor for any T20 game. His performances clearly reflect his altered thinking process. For Rahul, modern T20 success begins in the first six overs, this season in the Indian Premier League.
KL Rahul explains the clear shift in T20 approach, “T20 cricket has evolved over the last two or three years, especially in the IPL. You can see patterns in how teams are winning, and recently, teams that win the powerplay often go on to win the game.”
The perspective of Rahul depends on how the game is played now. Before, the teams would depend on their late acceleration. But things have changed. According to Rahul, an early domination creates pressure that runs throughout the entire innings. Now, teams are trying to score around sixty or more in just six overs. Even partial success matters. Intent, he insists, is non-negotiable in today’s format.
Adapting to an aggressive role at the top
Rahul’s development wasn’t by chance; he owes it all to clear communication between himself and his teammates’ management prior to the season. Rahul was instructed to open and bat with freedom. This enabled him to change his approach. He worked on aggressive batting while not changing his fundamentals. Rahul understands that the risks of failure are inherent to such batting. But he still bats aggressively first and foremost.
Rahul has cleared the discussion in the DC line-up for this year, as he said, “This season, the messaging from the team management was very clear. They spoke to me before the IPL and wanted me to bat at the top of the order and play with freedom… You won’t always succeed, but the idea is right.”
Openers: KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka
The combination with Pathum Nissanka has brought balance to the team. They focus on swift action, not lengthy deliberation in the middle of the game. The preparation takes place away from the field, and they make plans about different types of bowlers and scenarios ahead of time. In the middle of the game, their objective is straightforward – play aggressive cricket.
Rahul has enjoyed opening with Nissanka as he said, “It’s been fun. There isn’t a lot of talk in the middle… That’s what the team wants, around 60 in the powerplay… Most of the discussions happen off the field.”
Breaking the ‘Test player’ tag
Rahul also considered his path as a white-ball cricketer. In his early days in the sport, Rahul was not thought of as a T20 cricketer. This title motivated him to change himself. With time, he has worked hard at becoming more versatile and open-minded. Today, he feels proud of proving wrong what others used to think about him. While he is aware of his shortcomings in the past, he has never failed to prepare for the game.

Rahul has become a versatile cricketer across the formats, about which he said, “10 years ago, I would have given anything to be part of a T20 team… I was branded a Test player… to break out of that mould… is something I’m really proud of… I’ve given my absolute best every time.”
