The ascension of Meghalaya within the sphere of Indian football is picking up momentum, and this recent news is sure to add fuel to the fire. The region has been categorized under Group A in the Men’s National Football Championship, which will be a huge challenge for a team that has been improving year after year. With its semi-final performance in the last U-20 tournament and excellent performances at the senior level, Meghalaya is certainly making steady strides. This time around, the team enters the 2026 season with a new roster of 18 members, led by seasoned guidance, to perform even better than before.
The match will take place among five teams, including Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Jharkhand. The schedule will kick off on the 9th of May against Bihar, and then proceed on the 11th, 13th, and 17th of May. Preparations have been structured, and the squad reflects a mix of stability.
Steady rise backed by results
Looking at the recent achievements, Meghalaya is showing steady growth on all fronts. In 2025, their U-20 team made it to the semifinals after failing to get through the group stages in 2024. This is definitely a sign of an upward trend. For their seniors, they have recorded the best ever performance by reaching the finals of the Santosh Trophy as runners-up, defeating Punjab in the semi-finals with a scoreline of 3-2.
The youth teams from the state are also making good progress. Their U-20 team defeated Karnataka to qualify for the quarter-finals in 2025, but they failed to make it past the semi-finals. As for the junior competitions, they recorded amazing results in the group stages, especially defeating Andhra Pradesh with a scoreline of 11-0. They have recorded titles in 2024 in the Khelo India Youth Games (U-18) and National School Games (U-17).
It is important to note that the group stage will be a good measure of consistency and flexibility as well. Four games coming up in quick succession means that an early advantage will matter a lot. The match between Meghalaya and Bihar in the first game will be crucial. The games against Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh can decide whether they qualify or not. The last game against Rajasthan will be key to their success.
