Call Heinrich Klaasen and add him to 2027 World Cup squad, Kevin Pietersen tells South Africa

Once again, the explosive form of South African batter-wicket keeper Heinrich Klaasen has caught everyone’s attention during the IPL 2026 league. Recently playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Klaasen hit an outstanding 65-ball 65 run while chasing Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026. Overall, Klaasen has scored 414 runs in nine innings with a strike rate above 157 in the ongoing tournament. This form of the cricketer has again started the discussion about his retirement from the national side of South Africa before the World Cup in 2027.

Kevin Pietersen, who once led England as captain, has strongly advocated Klaasen’s comeback to South African cricket ahead of the home World Cup in 2027. He believes Klaasen’s current form can transform South Africa’s campaign in a home World Cup.

Pietersen wrote about Klassen’s call-up from South Africa stating, “There should be a phone call this morning from the South African cricket board to Heinrich Klaasen… to try and win their first ever World Cup.”

Klaasen Could Be the X-Factor

This appeal for Pietersen takes place during a period when Klaasen is dominating T20 cricket. He has been the key player for SRH in the middle-order position. It is not only the number of runs but the impact made by the batsman that has caught everyone’s attention. His strike rate of 157.41 shows his ability to accelerate under pressure.

Importantly, Klaasen’s international record supports Pietersen’s case. In ODIs, he scored 2,141 runs at an average of 43.69 and a strike rate above 117. He also delivered in big tournaments. During the 2023 ODI World Cup, he made 373 runs at a strike rate of 133.21.

Unfortunately, Klaasen has himself stated that he will not be coming back. His reasons were tied to his domestic obligations. Before the 2026 T20 World Cup, he had given it some thought but later backed out.

Can Klassen be South Africa’s Missing Piece?

The history of South Africa also comes into play. Even though there have been some really good sides, they have not won an ODI World Cup in their history in men’s cricket. Their latest ICC limited overs title was way back in 1998. They even made the finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup, but lost out.

These factors add fuel to Pietersen’s opinion. Klaasen can prove to be the man for the job for South Africa in 2027. This will be an ODI World Cup hosted by South Africa. They are expected to do well as conditions are going to favor them.

They have another example of this happening. Quinton de Kock came out of retirement for international tournaments. It turned out to be an inspired decision for the side. Pietersen hinted that Klaasen could follow a similar path.

Statistics have proven that Klaasen still belongs to the list of top white ball batsmen from South Africa for the last decade. In international cricket, he made more than 3,200 runs. His strike rate in T20 Internationals surpassed 140, while in ODIs, he was consistent yet powerful.
