I get some advantage- Mohammed Shami reveals why playing at Eden Gardens is special for him

It’s not any other stadium for Mohammed Shami. It’s familiarity, experience, and a hidden advantage combined. Just before a big game of IPL 2026 involving Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders, Shami stated that his experience of this ground offers him an inherent edge. With a good performance under his belt in the last game where he bagged a match-winning spell, the bowler showed confidence in his actions. And in his words, all these came from his experience of playing this ground for years now and having an understanding of its behavior.

More importantly, Eden Gardens signifies continuity for him. For years now, he has been playing at Kolkata. Experience makes him read the pitch fast. It helps him make adjustments quickly. In statistical terms as well, the value of his performance at the venue becomes evident. With respect to the international matches played there, Shami has grabbed 25 wickets in 10 innings, along with taking a five-wicket haul. This has allowed him to maintain an average slightly above 20. As he said about his performance here, “I get some advantage.”

Regarding Shami’s experience of playing at Kolkata, he said “You always have that home advantage playing at Eden Gardens. You understand the conditions, the pitch behaviour because you’ve played there for a long time.”

Journey from Stranger to Sensation of Kolkata

The connection Shami has developed with Kolkata is not out of professional necessity; he came here as a teenager from Uttar Pradesh with minimal help and exposure. The early times were difficult – sharing accommodation, small match fees, and lack of prospects. His life took a positive turn when he got a chance with a local club where he was selected, nurtured, and given shelter. His game kept improving by sheer practice – long net sessions, seam, and pace.

Slowly but steadily, he rose up within the ranks of the club, gained recognition, and entered the cricketing world of Bengal. Success started knocking. The discipline remained the same. Even today, he attributes the period for the formation of his character. Kolkata remained his “Karm Bhoomi.”

Consequently, Eden Gardens is more than just a pitch that he knows; it is the pitch on which he has made his name. This pitch represents the path he has taken from uncertainty to international cricket. Until now, he focuses on national cricket and still represents Bengal in the same way.

In summary, Eden Gardens is an embodiment of control, nostalgia, and identity for Shami. He can get an upper hand in the game by using his  knowledge of the pitch. However, apart from being a cricketing pitch, it symbolizes the place from where his cricket career began.
