Ravichandran Ashwin backs CSK in IPL 2026

A prediction can sometimes indicate not only the winning team, but also the form, the pressure, and the course that a match yet to be played is likely to take. Ahead of the IPL 2026 match between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings, Ravichandran Ashwin’s prediction was a combination of the two. It was not only a prediction, but a prediction that indicated the course the match was likely to take. Ashwin’s heart may have been in one place, but his mind was in a different place altogether.

Ashwin’s prediction was a combination of emotions and realities. Ashwin confessed to having a soft corner for the Chennai Super Kings. However, he was not afraid to declare the Punjab team the stronger team on paper.

Punjab ahead on CSK’s habitat

Ashwin’s position is clear in this regard. Though he is fond of Chennai, he thinks Punjab is favorites to win. His reason for this is their strong batting line-up. He is expecting a high-scoring match, in which small mistakes in bowling can prove costly.

Though Ashwin did not entirely write off CSK, he did say that their chances are based on execution. He thinks that Chennai can still win if their players deliver and use the conditions effectively.

Pitch becomes the Deciding-Factor

Coming to the conditions, Ashwin has described the Chennai pitch as lively. There is a bounce, and the pitch looks hard. A little grass could make the stroke play easier. Therefore, the batters will have a field day if the bowlers do not get their lengths correct.

However, Ashwin does not see the pitch helping the spinners too much. Therefore, the balance is tilted further in favor of the batters. In that case, teams may have to score above par to be on the safe side.

CSK’s Top Order Must Deliver

It is from this point that Ashwin’s argument starts. Ashwin emphasized that the top order for CSK is key to their success. Ashwin also referred to Gaikwad, Mhatre, and Samson as key players for them. At least one of them, he said, had to bat deep at 15 overs to lay a solid foundation. Without Brevis in the picture, this is even more important. Power hitters can only do their job and finish strongly if a good foundation is in place. So, it is up to the top three to do this job.

His advice on an ideal scenario: bowl first, restrict the opponent, and then chase. And this, he thinks, would give CSK the best chance of winning.

Ultimately, Ashwin’s advice is balanced. Punjab may get a head start. However, if CSK follow the script, the match could swing either way.
