Shubman Gill Captaincy RecordImage Source : BCCI

Just how good a record does Shubman Gill have where it comes to international cricket and what can be understood from the talent that the man from Punjab has for the country he loves representing where it comes to the most critical component of sport.

After all, isn’t leadership the trait we all aspire to achieve and love to excel at? The greats have done it in the past- such as Ganguly and Dhoni, two outstanding and legendary names from Shubman Gill’s India. But having said that, when a young man begins, he must also be contended with, with a sense of patience. Or else, we successfully manage to extinguish the fire one burns brightly with?

However, that does not tell the true picture, does it?

As a batter, and a dashing one at that, Shubman Gill, all of 26, is just beginning his career as a leader. Comparisons be damned, he is, fundamentally, replacing Rohit Sharma as the leader of the team in the fifty over format.

That said, that thing called “Leadership” is not just a quality; it’s an art. Here is an artist who himself leads by an example with the bat. An ample evidence of this was felt in the way he went about scoring a ton of runs earlier this year in England, in 2025 itself!

Had he not had it in him, not that anyone is questioning it, he won’t have inspired his troops to draw level with England in Test cricket’s most ardent challenge that he and his Team India overcame in the land of the country’s past colonisers.

Not only did the man already branded as the “prince of batting” lead by an example by scoring over 700 runs, he led his troops- and thank god for Siraj’s excellent form- to fight their way back to draw level with England.

Now, let us ask ourselves- how many of us would have thought that would happen, with England already ahead even before the final and fifth Test began- since there was no ‘Hitman’ Rohit Sharma, and yes, how can we not talk about the best batsman the world has produced- Virat Kohli all throughout the series?

Gill’s best days are ahead in the future. He’s going to lead in white ball cricket a team that not only has KL Rahul, but Rishabh Pant, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd Siraj and the likes in the ranks. Then there’s – lest it is forget- Tilak Varma and Abhishek Sharma. How can the team not produce outstanding and determined results under the man who already hit a double century by contributing to the best of his ability in, let it not be forgotten, just the 19th innings of his ODI career?

Remember that 208 and that too, against New Zealand and that too, against Ferguson, Tickner, and even Santner in the ranks?
