Seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton revealed on Thursday that work has begun on a sequel to the hit racing film F1: The Movie, with the script already in development.

The original movie, released last year, starred Brad Pitt and Damson Idris, and was directed by Joseph Kosinski, best known for helming Top Gun: Maverick. The production team also included veteran producer Jerry Bruckheimer alongside Hamilton himself.

Speaking in Melbourne ahead of the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, the Ferrari driver confirmed that early work on the sequel is underway.

“We’ve already started working on the initial script,” Hamilton said. “Around the middle to later part of the end of last year, Jerry, Joe and I had our first meeting where we discussed several ideas and possible directions for the story.”

“It’s really exciting,” he added. “The first experience was extremely intense. Now that I’ve been through it once, I’m more familiar with the process and know what to expect.”

In the first film, Pitt portrayed a seasoned veteran driver recruited to help revive a struggling Formula One team managed by his former teammate, played by Javier Bardem.

The story followed the tension between Pitt’s character and the team’s gifted rookie driver, played by Idris, whose resentment toward the older driver created the film’s central emotional conflict.

The movie proved to be a major box-office success, earning more than $630 million worldwide.

Hamilton said he has been impressed by the reaction from audiences.

“It’s been incredible to see the impact the film has had and how many people have embraced it,” he said. “I’m still receiving messages from people who have only just watched it and are saying it opened their eyes to what Formula One is really about.”

While acknowledging that sequels do not always live up to expectations, Hamilton expressed confidence in the team behind the project.

“Sequels can sometimes fall short,” he said. “But we have a fantastic team, a strong cast and a great writer, so I’m not worried.” We’re going to take our time and make sure we get it exactly right,” the man who last won an F1 race two seasons go added!
