What the BBL means for Australia, the IPL to India, the SA20 is to a certain South Africa. In no lame speak must it be contended that the SA20 happens to be South Africa’s flagship franchise-based T20 cricket league, introduced by Cricket South Africa (CSA) in 2023. It is not only bolstering the promotion of fresh and rising talent but giving the established names at a pan world cricket level a chance to lead by an example and give the rising generation the golden opportunity to learn from the best in the business. Isn’t it?

Launched to strengthen domestic cricket and attract global attention, the tournament features six city-based franchises and follows a double round-robin format leading into playoffs and a grand final. In a short span of time, SA20 has delivered high-quality cricket, passionate fan engagement, and memorable champions.

The inaugural SA20 season was held in 2023 much to the delight of the cricket loving Protea sport adoring fan back in South Africa. It would set the tone for the league’s competitive nature. The final was played at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, where Sunrisers Eastern Cape emerged as the first-ever champions. They defeated the Pretoria Capitals by 4 wickets, successfully chasing the target and lifting the historic maiden SA20 trophy. This victory marked the beginning of Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s dominance in the league.

Building on their success, Sunrisers Eastern Cape continued their winning momentum in the 2024 season. The final was held at Newlands, Cape Town, where they faced Durban’s Super Giants. Delivering a commanding all-round performance, Sunrisers Eastern Cape won the final by a massive 89 runs, becoming the first team to defend an SA20 title. Their success on the bounce culminated in multiple championships firmly established them as the most successful franchise in the tournament’s early years. And that’s no easy task, ever. The 2025 was new and exciting in terms of its eventual outcome. How so? The last season saw a shift in power as a new champion emerged.

Interestingly, the promising MI Cape Town ended Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s title streak with a dominant performance in the final, once again. That was hosted at the venerable Wanderers Stadium. In the game, MI Cape Town defeated Sunrisers Eastern Cape by 76 runs to claim their first SA20 title.

This victory added fresh competitiveness to the league and highlighted the growing balance among franchises.
