Unlike his usual lofty standards of batting in One-day Internationals, the limited overs great with the bat hasn’t really accomplished much against the Proteas men. And that’s not even an understatement or any kind of borderline rebuke. Rohit Gurunath Sharma is a great of the game. Anyone who hits a double hundred and that too, in a fifty over contest must be considered worthy of immense regard- that is not the author saying who hasn’t even broken Brian Lara’s record in book cricket. But such a lofty peak given it concerns 50-over cricket is special. Then, we have in Rohit Sharma a mountain climber with the bat in that he scales peaks few have ever- or may ever- reach. Evidence? Three double hundreds in ODIs- which other batter comes close in all these decades. The numbers do convey a point, don’t they? And yet, to have a batting average of just over 33 in ODIs played against South Africa with overall runs being just 806 (from 26 matches) doesn’t do justice to the earnest Mumbai man who is loved all around the country.
That said, what does Rohit Sharma’s ODI performance in South Africa look like?
| Matches | Runs | Highest Score | Average | 100s, 50s |
| 14 | 256 | 115 | 19.6 | 1 century |
Things to note about the Hitman who would most certainly like to hit it out of the park against South Africa this time around:
- At just above 19, and not even 20, Rohit Sharma’s batting average against South Africa is the second-lowest in terms of all the teams- countries- he has played in.
- Rohit Sharma averages the lowest in ODIs against- and at- Ireland. His batting average is 8.
- 112 of his 256 runs made in South Africa have by way of boundaries, 28 of them.
- His best ODI score in South Africa is the 115 he made off just 126 deliveries, which came in 2018 and at a strike rate of over 91.
