Amitabh Bachchan Sahab might be the angry young man and one who’s not stopping anytime soon given his humungous energy that can convert a sedate scene into a scintillating one even at his age (and perhaps nearly every time he appears on the screen). Naseeruddin Shah Sahab will likely be- and perpetually so- that mirror standing in front of which many an actor could get a reality check of being an actor in the first place. This especially in an age where the term star is attributed more value than the term craft. At the same time, Shah Rukh Khan will serve for times to come as that glowing example for the hopeless to believe in a tomorrow where can overcome obstacles through sheer relentlessness whilst keeping romance alive in the world. But the Indian Film Industry shall never again see a ‘He Man’ so loving and adorable, kind and stylish, full of character and so rooted in reality as the great Dharmendra. It’s a pity that soon as you wonder just who around anymore would serve as that famous adjective of power and persona that your mind shatters at the very thought of the great man’s demise; that incredible Dharam-garam-but Dil Se Naram- who is no more. But thankfully one would recollect a mighty gent- a giant on the screen and an idol off it- through a great body of work and countless memories. In his nine decades on planet earth, Dharmendra touched lives, inspired countless actors and has ultimately, sprinkled much like sublime showers a legacy built painstakingly on rigour and focus. He shall not be forgotten. Several Indian cricketers paid their tribute to the great cinematic icon, a role model figure, revered not just in his homeland Punjab but everywhere where films and its actors are a way of life, not just good looking faces to fall in love with:
Sachin Tendulkar
“I, like many others, took an instant liking to Dharmendra ji, the actor, who entertained us with his versatility. That on-screen bond became stronger off-screen when I met him. His energy was incredibly infectious, and he would always tell me, “Tumko dekhkar ek kilo khoon badh jaata hai mera.” He had an effortless warmth, making everyone around him feel valued and special. It was impossible not to be a fan of the person he was. Today, my heart feels heavy with his passing. Aisa lagta hai jaise mera 10 kilo khoon kam ho gaya hai. Will miss you.”
Virat Kohli
“Today, we have lost a legend of Indian cinema who captivated hearts with his charm and his talent. A true icon who inspired everyone who watched him. May the family find strength in this tough time. My sincere condolences to the whole family.”
Shikhar Dhawan
You stood tall, not just in stature, but in spirit. Dharmendra ji, thank you for showing us strength can be kind. Om Shanti.”
Virender Sehwag
“Dharmendra Ji was not just an actor, he was an era. A star in simplicity, a He-Man in strength, and a heart of gold. His films, his style, and his warmth will be remembered for generations. A great artiste, May God grant peace to his soul. Om Shanti.”
Suresh Raina
“Dharamendra ji was not just a superstar—he was emotion, charm, and the soul of an entire generation of cinema. Thank you for the memories you gave us. Rest in peace, He-Man of Bollywood. Om Shanti. Every home had a favourite Dharmendra film. He was a part of our growing up and of Indian cinema’s finest years. He brought strength, charm and honesty to every role, and carried Punjab’s warmth wherever he went. Behind the fame was a humble, grounded and deeply human soul. His legacy will live on in the hearts of millions. Condolences to @iamsunnydeol, @thedeol and the family!”
