Rishabh Pant’s New Zealand Test participation in doubt after missing India A’s final warm-up match

Rishabh Pant’s preparations for India’s upcoming Test series against New Zealand have suffered another setback, with the wicketkeeper-batter ruled out of the third and final unofficial Test between India A and New Zealand A. The development has raised fresh concerns over his availability for the two-match international series, which begins on November 19.

Pant was expected to use the four-day fixture in Lincoln, starting November 7, as an opportunity to regain match fitness after recovering from a side strain. However, the BCCI medical team has decided against rushing his return, keeping his participation subject to further fitness assessments.

Why is Rishabh Pant missing the India A match?

The 28-year-old sustained a left-side strain while captaining Rest of India in the Irani Cup in early October. He has not featured in competitive cricket since the injury and subsequently missed the first two unofficial Tests against New Zealand A.

Pant has been undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru since October 23. Although he has resumed skill-based training and is reportedly experiencing no pain, the medical team wants him to complete the necessary sessions before clearing him for competitive cricket.

His recovery has been encouraging, but there is still no confirmed timeline for his return to action.

Dhruv Jurel could get an opportunity in Pant’s absence

Pant’s absence also brings Dhruv Jurel into the spotlight. The wicketkeeper-batter has been leading India A during the New Zealand assignment and has strengthened his case with impressive performances, including a century in the second unofficial Test.

Jurel is also part of India’s 16-member Test squad and could become an important option if Pant fails to obtain fitness clearance.

India awaiting Pant’s fitness ahead of Wellington Test

India will begin their two-match Test series against New Zealand in Wellington on November 19, with the second encounter scheduled in Christchurch from November 27.

Pant’s aggressive batting, counterattacking ability and experience in overseas conditions make him a significant component of India’s plans. However, the team management will be keen to prioritise his long-term fitness rather than risk an early comeback.

With his final India A warm-up opportunity gone, the coming days will be crucial in determining whether Pant can recover in time for the opening Test.
