Michael Oliver named referee for Champions League clash between PSG and Barcelona

UEFA has appointed English referee Michael Oliver to officiate Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League clash against Barcelona on Tuesday, October 20. The historical record under his watch has favoured the French champions. The matchday 3 fixture will take place at the Parc des Princes, with kick-off scheduled for 9:00 PM local time. Oliver, who has officiated 48 Champions League matches, will be assisted by Stuart Burt and James Mainwaring.

Robert Jones has been named the fourth official, while Marco Di Bello and Daniele Chiffi will handle VAR duties. The appointment comes as UEFA confirms its refereeing assignments from the upcoming Champions League fixtures involving Barcelona, Villarreal and Atletico Madrid.

Michael Oliver’s Records Favours PSG over Barcelona

Oliver has officiated six matches involving PSG and five featuring Barcelona in European competition. His record in those games gives the Parisians reason for optimism ahead of the encounter. PSG have won four of their six matches under the English official, drawing once and losing once. Their results include a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad in the 2023-24 Champions League round of 16, a 3-0 win against RB Salzburg during the 2024-25 league phase and a 7-0 triumph over Brest in the 2024-25 knockout phase play-offs.

Barcelona, meanwhile, have recorded one win, two draws and two defeats across their five matches officiated by Oliver. Their record includes a 2-1 victory over Dynamo Kyiv, a goalless draw and a 0-3 defeat to Bayern Munich. Their most recent loss under the English referee came against PSG.

Oliver’s disciplinary record could also be worth watching. According to figures cited by ParisFans from Transfermarkt, he averages 4.42 yellow cards per Champions League match.
