How’s Max Verstappen’s record at the Singapore Grand Prix and what is he hoping to correct at the Marina Bay?

Usually, a good driver needs a car that suits his driving style to perform to the best of his abilities. But Max Verstappen has repeatedly shown that he can extract the maximum potential from his machinery, even when the odds appear stacked against him.

The 2026 Formula One season has been an interesting challenge for the four-time world champion. Mercedes, with its impressive machinery and the exceptional talent of Kimi Antonelli, has enjoyed a strong campaign. Lando Norris has also made his presence felt with back-to-back victories at Zandvoort and the Hungaroring.

Verstappen, meanwhile, has been quietly working towards finding the right balance with his Red Bull. Under team principal Laurent Mekies, the team has shown encouraging signs of progress, although consistency remains important in its efforts to challenge the front-runners.

The breakthrough came at the Bahrain Grand Prix, held at Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit. Verstappen converted pole position into victory, finishing 2.307 seconds ahead of Antonelli. It was Red Bull’s first win of the season and a reminder that the Dutchman remains a formidable competitor when given an opportunity.

Singapore, however, presented a different challenge.

The Marina Bay Street Circuit is one of Formula One’s most demanding venues, with its tight corners, unforgiving barriers and physically exhausting conditions. Despite his extraordinary record in the sport, Verstappen had never won the Singapore Grand Prix.

That statistic made his performance over the weekend particularly interesting.

Verstappen first secured pole position for the Singapore Sprint before negotiating the rain-affected contest to take victory. He then produced another outstanding qualifying lap to secure pole for Sunday’s Grand Prix, beating Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by just 0.054 seconds.

The latter achievement was especially significant. It was Verstappen’s first pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix and the 50th of his Formula One career.

It also underlined his ability to make the most of an improving Red Bull package. While the competition remains intense, Verstappen has demonstrated that the gap between the leading teams can be challenged when the car, driver and circumstances come together.

His career statistics tell their own story. With five pole positions each at Austria and Abu Dhabi, he has repeatedly excelled at circuits where he has found the right combination of speed and confidence. Singapore, though, has remained an elusive destination for a Grand Prix victory.

Now, starting from pole, Verstappen has an opportunity to address that gap in his remarkable record.

The challenge will be to convert Saturday’s qualifying brilliance into a complete Sunday performance. Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren will all be looking to make their presence felt, while Singapore’s unpredictable conditions can quickly change the complexion of a race.
