Smriti Mandhana has been appointed as the new captain of the Indian women’s cricket team by the BCCI. The stylish left-handed opener will take charge as full-time white-ball skipper, with her first assignment the upcoming home series against Zimbabwe.
The appointment comes after Harmanpreet Kaur formally stepped down from the captaincy across all formats. The left-hander who has been part of the Indian setup since 2013 and served as Harmanpreet’s long-time deputy, arrives with proven leadership credentials. She has already captained India in 18 T20Is with 11 wins, 6 losses, 1 no-result and four ODIs.
Apart from the national side, she led Royal Challengers Bengaluru to Women’s Premier League titles in 2024 and 2026, showcasing calm decision-making and the ability to build a winning culture. In a statement, Mandhana called the appointment a very special honour. “Representing India has always meant a great deal to me, and to now have the opportunity to lead the team is something I will value deeply,” she said. She also acknowledged Harmanpreet’s contribution, saying the senior all-rounder had led with great commitment.
“She Has Led the Team With Great Commitment”: Smriti Mandhana hails Harmanpreet Kaur
Smriti Mandhana acknowledged the services of the former India Women’s captain “I would also like to acknowledge Harmanpreet and the contribution she has made as captain over the years. She has led the team with great commitment and has been an important part of our journey. I understand the responsibility that comes with this role and look forward to working with the team, learning along the way and giving my best to take Indian cricket forward.” she said
BCCI President Mithun Manhas and Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia both backed the move, citing Mandhana’s experience, temperament and success with RCB as reasons for confidence that she will guide the side into its next phase. At 30, Mandhana is already one of the game’s highest run-scorers.
She also became the leading run-getter in women’s international cricket and the first Indian woman to score centuries in all three formats. Harmanpreet, who led India to their maiden ODI World Cup triumph in 2025 and successive Asian Games gold medals, announced her decision earlier on Tuesday. She will continue as a player, saying she now wants to play purely for the love of the game.
