‘It simply didn’t feel like Formula 1’:  George Russell calls Sepang GP an ‘absolute farce’

George Russell recently expressed his disappointment after the Sepang race and he described the event as an absolute farce. The Formula 1 driver did not hold back in his criticism as he was vocal about all the issues that happened during the race as it affected the entire mood of the race. Russell even claimed that he did not even feel it was a Formula 1 race with so many errors and unexpected happenings during the race. He emphasized that if he was a fan that simply just watched the race at home, he wouldn’t be satisfied with the quality of the race that was on display.

“The whole day felt like a farce. Between the delayed start, red flag, endless Safety Cars, overtaking confusion and the last-minute extra lap, Russell says it simply didn’t feel like Formula 1. I would have been truly disappointed even if I’d just been a fan sitting on my couch watching this show. It wasn’t pretty to watch,” stated George Russell and he was absolutely vivid with his remarks. This would serve as a massive blow to Formula1 in terms of the errors that occurred during the race.

Russell’s late power failure compounds his championship setback

The controversy regarding the race began right from the start of the race with the heavily delayed start. Russell claimed that there was a disruptive red flag which had a negative impact on the concentration of the racers. Concerns were also raised regarding the excessive number of Safety Car deployments and certain instances of confusing overtaking. Another issue was the unexpected last-minute extra lap that once again disrupted the momentum of George Russell. These compounding issues and lapses were a bit too much for the standards of a Formula1 race and it has been heavily criticised.

Russell admitted to his sheer lack of pace in the qualifying race as he was outpaced by his Mercedes teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Despite the tricky grid position, Russell drove a clean and measured race strategy on Sunday, putting himself firmly on course for a comfortable third-place finish and a valuable haul of points. He just had a couple of laps to go until he secured his spot but a sudden unexpected power failure forced him to retire from the race. This is his third DNF of the 2026 season and it has dealt a serious blow to his championship aspirations. This stretched his deficit by a huge margin behind his teammate Antonelli to 84 points.

Russell’s outspoken criticism highlights the urgent need for FIA and race control to streamline procedures and ensure that modern Formula 1 events maintain high standards. He admits to have been unlucky in the race as well due to the sudden power failure behind the Safety Car. The Sepang Race has been subject to much criticism due to their lapses and Formula 1 would need to seriously consider looking into the issue.
