First things first. Kamil Pooran and Nicholas Pooran aren’t related. But if one were so inclined indeed to spot some connection, then perhaps it’s the classic case of stating the obvious, which well, would be a cliche as banal as saying there’s terrible traffic in Mumbai, or something like Switzerland has Alps or maybe that Tendulkar played the best straight drive. The only plausible connect you can find on paper and for real between Kamil Pooran and Nicholas Pooran is that both hail from the same island nation that’s given the West Indies cricket suave stylists with the bat, such as a certain Brian Charles Lara.
Other than that, Kamil Pooran, 30, born in June of 1996, doesn’t even bat left handed like his famous Trinidadian namesake sporting the same surname, who happens to be a former captain of the West Indies team.
Nicholas Pooran, on the other hand, just turned 31, on October 2, but no more in sync with the world where one wears the West Indian maroon, which Kamil Pooran- likely will in the next few hours.
Because in the next few hours, Shreyas Iyer’s India, a solid talent pool that boasts of World Cup winning names such as Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, Abhishek Sharma, among others, will be prepared to face the West Indies in a 5-match T20I series.

The most relevant question, then becomes, whether Kamil Pooran is prepared? Not that there’s much sense in examining that for coach Darren Sammy and Shai Hope feel so.
Else why would a cricketer with just 15 first class innings be made to debut for the Windies in T20I’s?
For what’s known, Pooran, a right hander, made his First class debut and List-A debut in March 2023, and October 2024, respectively.
As a top order batter who’s played just 8 first class games, and as many as 4 List A games, Kamil Pooran’s current run aggregate is 333 runs.
Known for being a boundary hitter as well as one who can stick to the wicket, Kamil Pooran has hit 52 boundaries, as on date, during his 8 match first-class career.
That’s 208 of his 333 runs by way of just fours.
To a country that has entertainment in its DNA, Kamil Pooran has an excellent chance to play that way and make something of the contests lying up ahead.
His captain would like to utilise Pooran thoughtfully, since selection strategies may warrant rotation of the talents the West Indies have given there’s 5 T20I’s in the series.
With there being no dearth of batting talent at Shai Hope’s disposal, with the likes of Rutherford, Chase, Shepherd, and now Hetmyer also back having been rested well during the 3-match series, the contests can offer a fine chance for the Trinidadian to come to the challenge of playing international cricket.
What’s plausibly working and has already worked well for Kamil Pooran, about whom not a lot is known at this time, is that the recent CPL edition was his breakthrough season.
Besides being his maiden season in the West Indies’s most recognised franchise based league, Pooran got as many as 8 games to demonstrate his batting potential.
And it was there to be seen.
From 8 matches, he hit 273 runs and stayed at the wicket for nearly 29 overs, during the entirety of the competition.
But having said all of that, there’s indeed a vital area where Kamil Pooran can play a key role for his Caribbean side. For a team that’s notorious for consuming one dot ball too many, Kamil Pooran can score briskly without adding to – or getting bogged down by- the scoreboard pressure. At least, that’s what his flowing starts in the CPL indicated.
Moreover, his CPL 2026 season strike rate of nearly 160 inspires confidence.
132 of his CPL runs from the total aggregate of 273 came by way of boundaries.
His finest moment in the 2026 edition of the CPL, lest we forget, came during the match against the Jamaica Kingsmen. Off the 170 his St Lucia side needed, the right hander smashed 81 off just 49 deliveries against an attack comprising Andre Russell, Odean Smith, Vital Lawes and Keemo Paul.
If that contest (held at Gros Islet) serves an indication, then Pooran’s knock that culminated in a fine fifty off just 26 deliveries offers confidence.
He’d hit 6 boundaries and 4 sixes during that effort, the kind of batting his West Indies would need in the forthcoming contests against India.
And while the man known for his quickfire starts in the CPL 2026 might not have it necessarily easy given a first time playing India, one can’t rule out the excitement that the name ‘Pooran’ instantly brings.
In the past it was about Nicholas, now it’s going to be about Kamil, hopefully speaking.
