Barcelona’s Camp Nou is set to host another major European night after it has been confirmed as the host of the 2029 Champions League Final. The announcement was made by UEFA’s Executive Committee following its meeting in Thessaloniki, where it selected Barcelona’s bid ahead of Wembley. The final is expected to be played on June 2, 2029, and will give Camp Nou a chance to welcome European Football’s biggest club fixture once again. The decision comes as the right time for Barcelona, considering the stadium is currently undergoing an extensive redevelopment.
It is now expected to become one of Europe’s biggest football stadiums with its eventual capacity projected to reach around 105,000 spectators at one time. Notably, Barcelona returned to the stadium last November after spending more than two years playing their home games elsewhere. The current capacity is capped at around 62,000, with the third tier and roof still to be completed. The club expects the redevelopment work to be completed by 2028, and timeline would give Barcelona enough time to prepare for the venue for the 2029 Champions League final.
2029 Marks Third Champions League Finals at Camp Nou
The 2029 showpiece would mark the third time Camp Nou would host a European Cup or Champions League Final. Previously, it staged the 1989 final where AC Milan got the better of Steaua Bucharest 4-0. Later, it witnessed one of the most memorable comebacks in Champions League history, where two stoppage-time goals helped Manchester United record a comeback and lift the trophy over Bayern Munich in 1999.
Apart from it, UEFA has also confirmed that the 2028 Champions League Final will be played at the Munich Football Arena, home of Bayern Munich. It has previously hosted the finals in 2012 and 2025. In addition, venues for several other major finals in 2028 and 2029 have also been announced. The 2028 Women’s Champions League final will be played at Parc Olympique Lyonnais while Cardiff’s National Stadium of Wales will host the 2029 edition. On the other hand, Bucharest’s National Arena and Belgrade’s National Stadium will host the 2028 Europa League final and the 2029 final.
