Messi’s Argentina career lasted 21 years. He made his senior debut as an 18-year-old in 2005 and was still Argentina’s captain at 39 during the 2026 World Cup. There are very few elite players who have had such a long career for their national team for anything close to that length of time. He has left his legacy for Argentina and the World which might not be matched anytime soon. Not only this, but Messi also did not simply smash goals from the box, he created them as well with his dribbling style and also smart thinking. The 39-year-old retired with 125 Argentina goals and a record 12 World Cup assists, while his 21 World Cup goals placed him second on the tournament’s all-time scoring list.
2. The World Cup Consistency
Messi scored at every stage of the 2022 World Cup, becoming the first player to score in the group stage, round of 16, quarter-final, semi-final and final of the same edition. He finished the tournament with seven goals and three assists, won the Golden Ball and finally lifted the trophy that had eluded him for so long. What makes the achievement even more special is that it came in his fifth World Cup. Messi had already experienced the disappointment of losing the 2014 final and the frustration of Argentina’s earlier exits. He then returned at 39 for a sixth World Cup in 2026 and continued to dominate once again leading his side to the Final. This consistency across so many World Cups makes him a very special player.
3.The Ability to Reinvent Himself
Lionel Messi who won the 2008 Olympic gold medal was not the same player who captained Argentina to the 2022 World Cup. His role changed as he aged, moving from a player who relied heavily on acceleration to one who increasingly controlled matches through passing, positioning and set pieces.
