Titled MOURINHO, the series explores the Portuguese manager’s extraordinary football career and controversial public persona. It was filmed over two years and features extensive access to Mourinho himself. The documentary traces his rise from FC Porto to the biggest clubs in European football. His managerial journey includes Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Roma. Mourinho won league titles in four different countries. He also lifted the UEFA Champions League twice during his decorated career.
The series also features interviews with several major figures from Mourinho’s career. Sir Alex Ferguson, John Terry, Frank Lampard, Iker Casillas, Didier Drogba, Zlatan Ibrahimović and Samuel Eto’o are among those featured. The documentary examines Mourinho’s tactical success, intense rivalries and distinctive personality. It also revisits some of the biggest moments of his career. These include Porto’s Champions League triumph and Inter Milan’s historic treble. Netflix describes Mourinho as one of football’s most successful and outspoken managers. The series is directed by Joe Pearlman, who previously worked on documentaries about David Beckham and Robbie Williams. Producer John Battsek, who worked on BECKHAM, is also involved. MOURINHO premiered globally on Netflix on August 11, 2026, with all three episodes available to viewers.

José Mourinho has revealed that he had already signed an agreement to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in 2013. The revelation appears in Netflix’s new three-part documentary MOURINHO. Mourinho said the opportunity came after his departure from Real Madrid. “When I left Real Madrid, I signed with Manchester United to go to Manchester United after Sir Alex,” he revealed. The Portuguese manager admitted he was very flattered by United’s interest. He also described the club’s appeal as enormous. “When I say Real Madrid is the biggest club in the world, I have to say that Manchester United is very, very close,” Mourinho said.
However, Mourinho ultimately chose to return to Chelsea instead. He explained that his decision was influenced by his emotional connection with the London club. “For me to lose the chance to be the coach to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson was dramatic, but I don’t regret because it was a decision that I made with my heart,” he said. Ferguson also recalled receiving Mourinho’s call. “Early evening he phoned me and he was crying,” Ferguson said. He added that Mourinho told him, “Alex, I can’t take it – I’ve given my word to Chelsea, and I’m not going to break my word.” Mourinho eventually joined Manchester United in 2016. He spent two-and-a-half seasons at Old Trafford and won three trophies.
