Australia has unveiled a nearly full-strength squad for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh in 2026. Captain Pat Cummins is making his return, joined by Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon, who are also back after their injury setbacks. The 13-member team is gearing up for a two-match ICC World Test Championship series, bringing back Australia’s seasoned bowling lineup of Cummins, Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Lyon. This series also signals the start of a new chapter for Australia as they move on from Usman Khawaja, with Jake Weatherald holding onto his spot at the top of the order as the team readies itself for Tests in Darwin and Mackay next month.
The National Selection Panel announced the squad on Monday, following the recovery of several senior players who had been sidelined due to injuries that affected Australia’s home summer. The first Test will take place in Darwin from August 13 to 17, followed by the second and final match in Mackay from August 22 to 26. Both Tests are part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle.
Australia Prioritise Experience for Bangladesh Tests
Australia’s selectors have decided to stick with their tried-and-true players, even though some fringe players really shone during the recent Ashes series. Michael Neser, who made a solid impact after stepping in and contributed with both bat and ball, won’t be part of the 13-player squad. Todd Murphy and Brendan Doggett also missed out after being part of Australia’s last Test in Sydney, but they’re still in the mix if needed.
This squad marks the return of Australia’s well-established frontline attack. Cummins, Hazlewood, and Lyon are all back in action after recovering from their injuries, which really boosts a bowling unit that hasn’t had the chance to play together much in recent series. Selection chairman George Bailey mentioned that the trio has gone through extensive rehab and are fit to play, but he added that the final playing XI will be decided closer to the first Test. He also pointed out that Australia’s packed international schedule over the next year will open doors for a broader group of players across different formats.
On another note, the upcoming series against Bangladesh will be Australia’s first Test since veteran opener Usman Khawaja hung up his international boots.
