Ireland Women React With Joy as Men’s Team Beats India for the First Time in 1st T20I at Belfast

The Ireland Women’s team couldn’t contain their excitement as they celebrated the men’s team’s historic win over India during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. As the final wicket fell in the first T20I in Belfast, the women’s squad, who were in the midst of their own tournament, gathered around a screen to witness the thrilling conclusion. The moment was electric – players jumped for joy, embraced one another, and cheered loudly as Ireland clinched a remarkable 34-run victory against the reigning T20 world champions. This heartfelt celebration beautifully showcased the strong bond between the men’s and women’s teams, quickly becoming one of the most memorable images from a day that will go down in Irish cricket history.

Before long, the video of their celebration made its rounds on cricket platforms and social media, with fans lauding the camaraderie between the two national teams. The significance of the win was heightened by the fact that debutant Jai Moondra became just the second Ireland bowler to take a wicket with his very first delivery in international cricket. Remarkably, prior to this match on June 26, Ireland had never managed to defeat India in a T20I, having lost all 11 encounters before this one.

Debut Stars and Captain Lorcan Tucker Lead Ireland to Famous Win Over India

Ireland showcased a disciplined all-around performance, clinching a 34-run victory over India in the opening T20I at Stormont, Belfast. This match marked a tough start for Shreyas Iyer as he took the reins as India’s new T20I captain. Much of the buzz before the game revolved around the potential debut of 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, but India ultimately decided to leave the young talent out of the playing XI. Instead, it was the debutants from Ireland who stole the spotlight. Batting first, Ireland bounced back from a shaky 36/3 after six overs to finish with a solid 182/9. Captain Lorcan Tucker played a crucial role, scoring 50 off 36 balls before being dismissed by Harshit Rana with a cleverly disguised slower ball. Gareth Delany then shifted the momentum, smashing 49 runs off 32 balls, including three consecutive sixes off Prasidh Krishna. Harshit was India’s standout bowler, ending with impressive figures of 3/24, while Axar Patel picked up two late wickets. However, Washington Sundar had a rough outing, conceding 19 runs in a single over, and Prasidh ended with costly figures of 0/57.

India started their chase with aggression as Abhishek Sharma lit up the innings with a quickfire 50 off just 20 balls, hitting seven fours and two sixes to help India reach 68/3 during the powerplay. Unfortunately for India, Ireland continued to take wickets at crucial moments. Debutant Matthew Hollard made a significant impact, taking out Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, and Washington Sundar to finish with 3/28. Jai Moondra also made his mark by dismissing Sanju Samson with his very first international delivery and later getting Shivam Dube out. Matthew Humphreys contributed with 3/38 as India’s middle order struggled to form partnerships. Tilak Varma managed 19 runs off 21 balls, Sundar could only muster nine, and Shivam Dube’s 25 wasn’t enough to turn the tide. Ultimately, India was bowled out for 148 in 18.5 overs, marking a historic moment for Irish cricket as they celebrated their first-ever international victory over India.
