Ferrari, the legendary Italian Formula 1 team, is making strides to catch up with the leaders on the grid. As we gear up for this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix, Scuderia has announced its first engine upgrade under the Formula 1 Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) system. On Wednesday, it was confirmed that Ferrari has greenlit the new power unit for the Red Bull Ring. This decision follows the team’s recent advancements in Spain and highlights a broader strategy to enhance performance throughout the rest of the 2026 season, rather than just seeking a quick fix.
Enrico Gualtieri, Ferrari’s power unit technical director, emphasized that this upgrade shouldn’t be seen as a game-changer.
While he acknowledged that, “The entire team at the factory is now working relentlessly to make the most of the additional opportunities provided by the ADUO mechanism, in full alignment with our intended development roadmap.”
Gualtieri pointed out that a single update is unlikely to shake up the competitive landscape. Instead, it showcases Ferrari’s dedication to ongoing development and their intent to seize every opportunity allowed by the regulations.
Ferrari Sees Austrian Upgrade as First Step in Development Phase
The Austrian Grand Prix might just kick off a new chapter in Ferrari’s development journey. This season, the team has qualified for two ADUO upgrades after discovering that their power unit was lagging behind the benchmark engine by at least four percent. This revelation has given Ferrari the green light to ramp up their development efforts throughout the year.
What’s even more exciting is that this upgrade comes just weeks after Ferrari celebrated its first win in almost two years in Spain. Lewis Hamilton’s victory has narrowed the gap to championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli to 41 points, with 15 races still to go. In Barcelona, Ferrari also rolled out a significant aerodynamic package that boosted the overall performance of the car. However, they still struggled with straight-line speed. The upcoming update in Austria aims to tackle some of that shortfall, with reports indicating a potential gain of less than 10 horsepower.
Ferrari Prepares Turbocharged Engine for Upcoming Season
Even though the Spielberg package is on the smaller side, Ferrari is already gearing up for a bigger upgrade later in the season. The team’s second ADUO upgrade is anticipated to roll out after the summer break, and it’s rumored to feature a revamped turbocharger as part of a broader push for enhanced performance.
In the meantime, Ferrari’s engineers are juggling short-term enhancements with long-term projects. Gualtieri mentioned that both development paths are running side by side, which enables the team to quickly bring fresh ideas from the factory to the racetrack. With two upgrade chances this season and two more lined up for next year, Ferrari has a solid roadmap ahead. The emphasis is on making steady improvements, boosting reliability, and narrowing the gap to Mercedes through consistent progress rather than making drastic changes.
