Australia kicked off its FIFA World Cup 2026 journey with a solid 2-0 win over Türkiye in Vancouver, thanks to two rising stars. Nestory Irankunda, the 20-year-old winger from Watford, made history by becoming the youngest Australian to score in a men’s World Cup. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Patrick Beach shone brightly on his World Cup debut, playing a pivotal role in the match with eight crucial saves and even starting the play that led to the first goal. Their impressive performances not only secured Australia a spot in the tournament’s first major upset but also placed them second in Group D, just behind the United States on goal difference.
Irankunda regarding his goal and goalkeeper Patrick Beach’s performance after the match said, “We’ve got the win now, we worked extra hard, we fought till the end, and it’s just an exciting moment. It feels amazing. You’ve got to thank the staff, you’ve got to thank the nation. They all have the belief in me to do so well, and I felt like today getting that goal, it was amazing.”
The first goal came in the 27th minute when Australia swiftly transitioned from defense to attack. Beach kicked off the play, and Paul Okon-Engstler’s long pass found Irankunda, who skillfully slipped past the Turkish defense. With nerves of steel, the winger finished low into the net. Later on, Beach showcased his skills again, making a fingertip save that deflected Abdulkerim Bardakci’s powerful shot onto the post, keeping Australia in the lead.
Tony Popovic’s Bold Calls Deliver for Australia
Tony Popovic, the Australian coach, made a huge risk by choosing Beach rather than the more seasoned Mat Ryan. Moreover, he put another youngster into the starting line-up by naming Okon-Engstler in the team. Both of these selections paid off right away, with Beach making eight saves and Okon-Engstler providing the assist on Australia’s first goal. It was an impressive performance from a team that had to face 30 shots and was outpossessed 72 percent to their opponents.
Popovic spoke about his team’s performance following the game.
The Australian coach noted “Proud to be here as head coach, to experience this, put a smile on these people’s faces that have travelled so far to support us. And just happy for a wonderful young group of men.”
He mentioned that there was a need for fast recovery, as Australia would be playing against another strong side – the USA. The win earned three points for Australia, putting them in good standing in Group D. Turkey, who dominated much of the game but failed to score, have plenty to think about going into the next fixture.
