The injury to India’s run-machine, Virat Kohli is likely to give rise to one of the most pertinent issues in India’s ODI playing scenario prior to next year’s World Cup. In the wake of the loss of the seasoned cricketer to the upcoming Afghanistan series, the competition for the vital number three slot will begin. In response, the bowling coach of India, Morne Morkel, has stated that the team management is ready to experiment with different candidates for the job. “We’ll play around with it,” he stated. As such, the three ODI matches scheduled between the two nations will serve as a sort of audition ground for the candidates.
According to Morkel, Virat is a big miss but it’s an opportunity for the other youngsters as he said, “Obviously, a big miss, you know, with Virat. He’s one of the senior players, the leaders in the team.. In terms of that number three slot, I think that’s something in this series we’ll play around with, you know.”
” Even if it’s Ishan or KL or Yashasvi, it’s a nice opportunity now. We’ve got a couple of one-day games coming up and we’ll give guys an opportunity in different slots just to give ourselves a better idea in terms of how we can go and structure teams and have different options,” he added.
India’s forthcoming tour of Afghanistan cannot be seen as just another bilateral assignment for the Indian side. With the key men sidelined for various reasons related to injuries and load management, the management needs to know whether there is enough depth in the team and whether they have viable options at their disposal.
Nitish Kumar Reddy Gets His Chance
India’s recent squad changes have opened the door for Nitish Kumar Reddy. With Hardik Pandya sidelined due to an injury he sustained just before the series, the young all-rounder now has a chance to make his mark in a role that’s vital for India’s ODI lineup.
Morkel noted that while it’s unfortunate to lose Pandya, as he said,“You look at your options like we do in batting, bowling. Same as with with the all-rounders. Unfortunately, Hardik is missing this series. He picked up a niggle very close to joining the camp. But again, it’s another opportunity now for Nitish Kumar Reddy. He’s been playing beautifully, you know, the last sort of two years. He has done a lot of work personally on his game. And, you know, like we said earlier with the new bowlers coming into the squad, it’s an opportunity for guys also in that role to put their hand up and make life difficult for the selectors.”
He commended Reddy’s development over the past two years, emphasizing the dedication he’s shown in honing his skills. India will be keeping a close eye on how he manages the extra pressure with both bat and ball. If he delivers strong performances against Afghanistan, it could bolster his case as a key all-round option as they head into the World Cup year.
“Nothing Wrong with Rohit Sharma”
Even though the absence of Kohli is not great news for India, it was glad to receive some positive reports about Rohit Sharma. The Indian opener has managed to successfully undergo all fitness tests after overcoming a hamstring problem which had bothered him during his stint with the Indian Premier League. Morkel had nothing to worry about the state of Rohit as the veteran opener was reported to be free of injury, able to train as usual. The return of the batter will be very crucial for India due to his invaluable experience.
Opportunity for New Bowlers
The Afghanistan series is set to be a great opportunity for India to test out their up-and-coming pace bowlers. With Jasprit Bumrah taking a break, young talents Prince Yadav and Gurnoor Brar are in the running for their first international caps.
Morkel has been singing their praises, highlighting their calmness and precision during training, as he said, “Like we said earlier with the new bowlers coming into the squad, it’s an opportunity for guys also in that role to put their hand up and make life difficult for the selectors.”
The coach is confident that facing quality opposition in international cricket will really help broaden India’s fast-bowling talent pool as they gear up for the World Cup. For the selectors, these upcoming matches are a golden opportunity to evaluate new talent in real match situations while also working on strengthening the squad across all areas.
