The New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has confirmed India’s tour of New Zealand as part of the bilateral assignment for the summer of 2026-27. It is perhaps going to be the biggest ever bilateral assignment in the cricketing history of New Zealand as it is scheduled to have 12 matches in all three forms. The series, set to start from October 22 and continue till December 1, comprises five T20 internationals, five ODI matches, and two tests. Apart from being a massive event, it holds immense importance for both sides because it would be played for World Test Championship points and World Cup preparations among others.
This is also going to be India’s first-ever all-format tour of New Zealand from the 2019-20 season. Major grounds like Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland, Hamilton, and Tauranga will host matches during this tour. As this tour is going to feature some of India’s most promising players, NZC believes that this series is a milestone in their cricketing history.

Three Reasons Why This Tour Is Historic for New Zealand
Firstly, it is a matter of scale. The number of fixtures against an international team during a visit is unprecedented for NZC, which will be hosting its visitors for playing twelve games in a single series. Secondly, the upcoming series will mark the return of Indian Test teams to New Zealand after a gap of more than six years following the last tour held in 2019-20. Thirdly, the visit takes place in celebration of one hundred years of sporting ties between India and New Zealand.

Why is the Test Series important?
The two-Test series could play a decisive role in the World Test Championship cycle. India’s remaining opportunities to secure crucial points are limited, which increases the significance of the matches in Wellington and Christchurch. New Zealand conditions have traditionally challenged visiting batters, and India have not won a Test series there since 2009. Their previous Test tour ended in a 2-0 defeat. A strong performance would strengthen India’s position in the championship race, while another setback could hurt their hopes of reaching the 2027 WTC Final.
India’s Test Schedule This Year
This New Zealand tour comes amid a hectic schedule for the Indian team. Before heading off to New Zealand, India is set to face Afghanistan in home matches before playing one-day games against Ireland and England. After that, they will play two Test series against Sri Lanka and then make their way to New Zealand. This will keep India occupied with international matches almost throughout 2026 from June to December due to these consecutive games. Nonetheless, these Test matches against New Zealand will be considered some of the most significant matches of the year because of their importance in Test cricket.
