Most IPL playoffs appearances as captain

Though many talented captains have emerged from the Indian Premier League, there is none as prolific in leading the way to the playoffs as MS Dhoni. Having been at the helm of his team for a long time as its captain, MS Dhoni stands out in the IPL having qualified for the playoffs a record 12 times as his team’s captain. Throughout his career as captain spanning 14 seasons, Dhoni has led the Chennai Super Kings to reach the playoffs, making it to 10 finals and winning 5 titles. No other captain can rival these achievements considering the ever-changing nature of the league.

Qualifying for the playoffs is one thing, winning the playoff race being another, something not many captains have accomplished in the past. Although there have been many captains who have lifted the title in their respective seasons, very few have qualified for the playoffs consistently. Dhoni tops the list of those few captains by far. Other captains who follow include Rohit Sharma, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer.

MS Dhoni – 17 Playoff Wins

The playoff statistics of Dhoni still hold the record for best in IPL. He led sides for 12 playoff finishes mostly through CSK but also played in the 2017 playoffs for Rising Pune Supergiant as a batsman. Under his captaincy, CSK was regarded as one of the most consistent playoff sides.

Moreover, Dhoni’s record as a captain in the playoff matches is nothing less than impressive. He led the side in 26 knockout matches in which he won 17 and lost 9. This gives him a winning ratio of 65.38%. Moreover, it must be noted that he turned 12 playoff runs into 10 final entries. Under him, CSK managed to lift the IPL trophy in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023. Consistency is evident from the stats that CSK made the playoffs for 12 times in 14 seasons where Dhoni led the side.

Rohit Sharma – 10 Playoff Wins

Rohit Sharma is number two on the list, as he has seven playoff runs as the captain of the Mumbai Indians. Even though the number of playoff runs for him is less compared to that of Dhoni, it is the efficiency of Rohit in finals that makes the difference.

Rohit took charge of the Mumbai Indians in 14 playoff games, where they won 10 and lost only four. The playoff win rate of Rohit is one of the highest among the IPL captains who have been captaining their teams for long periods. Most importantly, he has led the Mumbai Indians into five IPL finals and helped win 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 – all five of them.

Gautam Gambhir – 5 Playoff Wins

The captaincy era of Gautam Gambhir saw his team emerge as title contenders in all the years he was at the helm. He had his teams qualify for playoffs in five seasons and assembled a competitive side like no other in the history of IPL. In playoff matches, he was the skipper in eight matches, winning five and losing three matches. Thus, his winning ratio in the playoffs as a skipper was 62.5%.

However, his best achievement in captaincy in IPL was that he did not lose any match till date when it came to IPL finals. With this, Gautam Gambhir took his team to IPL crowns in 2012 and 2014 with his cool and aggressive approach to the game.
