The FIFA World Cup 2026 is set to take place in three nations including the US, Canada and Mexico. It is noteworthy that the new World Cup is scheduled to last for 39 days. It will start from Vancouver in the north and end in Miami in the south. It brings together stadiums and football fans in the continent of North America. Moreover, Mexico will be hosting its third FIFA World Cup.
2026 World Cup Venues: 16 Host Cities, 3 Nations
The United States will be the country hosting most of the games, with 11 stadiums. Some of these are Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, Seattle, Atlanta, and New York-New Jersey. Dallas will use its AT&T Stadium which can hold up to 94,000 people. It will host nine matches, the highest for any stadium in the world. Canada will play its matches in Toronto and Vancouver. BMO Field in Toronto will play host to the first match of Canada, while BC Place in Vancouver will host all group and knockout matches.
Mexico will play some of its matches in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey. The legendary Estadio Azteca in Mexico City will host the first match. This makes it the first stadium to host World Cup matches in three World Cups, after 1970 and 1986.
What Is the Format for the World Cup in 2026?
This year, for the first time, there will be 48 participating teams instead of the usual 32 teams. These teams have been segregated into 12 groups containing four teams each. Each team will have to play three games during the group stage. The two top-ranked teams of each group qualify directly. They are also accompanied by the top eight ranked teams in third position. Thus, there is a new round of 32 followed by the rounds of 16, quarters, semi-finals and the final.
A total of 104 games will be played, which is 40 more than the number of games in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
World Cup 2026 Match Schedule
The tournament kicks off on June 11, 2026, as Mexico takes on South Africa in the opening match in Estadio Azteca. Group matches will continue until June 27. Matches for the Round of 32 will be contested between June 28 and July 3. Then the Round of 16 will occur from July 4 to July 7. The quarter-finals will take place from July 9 to July 11, and the semi-finals will occur in Dallas and Atlanta on July 14 and 15, respectively.
Third place will be contested in Miami on July 18. The next day, on July 19, the World Cup final will occur in MetLife Stadium, New York-New Jersey. For the first time, there will also be a half-time show in the finals, similar to the Super Bowl event.
