Punjab Kings find themselves on the brink of throwing away a promising IPL 2026 season. After falling to a three-run loss against Delhi Capitals at Dharamsala on Monday, the Punjab team is now on a four-match losing streak. This defeat brought into the light some problems which have plagued the Punjab team throughout the season. Although scoring 210/5 and putting Delhi at 33/3, the Punjab team could not capitalize on the advantage. The head coach of the team, Ricky Ponting, was highly disappointed.
Ponting’s frustration was visible through his words, as he said “I am not going to give any excuses. When a catch like that comes, you have got to take it.”
Punjab had batted well enough to be in control of the game. Priyansh Arya scored 56 runs in just 33 balls, whereas Shreyas Iyer played an anchor role for Punjab in the match with his undefeated 59 runs. The game changed for Punjab after their poor catching allowed Delhi to come back into the game.
Ponting’s Delight After KL Rahul’s Early Exit
This was epitomized by an incident where Arshdeep Singh had removed KL Rahul for nine runs, making Ponting break into laughter in the dugout. This showed relief and conviction at the same time.
The delivery bowled by Arshdeep caused the batsman to play the leading edge shot, which was taken by Marco Jansen. Punjab was one step away from victory with the score reading 33/3 in just five overs. However, Delhi recovered steadily and chased down 211 in six overs to spare.
Fielding Errors Continue to Hurt Punjab Kings
Ponting’s statements after the match pertained to a situation that had been troubling Punjab all season long. For instance, against Delhi, Suryansh Shedge failed to hold on to a chance of Axar Patel when he was on 25. Axar went on to punish Punjab with a score of 56 from just 30 balls.
This has become a common trend for Punjab this season. In the last loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab dropped as many as three catches. According to Ponting, this problem has now turned into a “virus,” in which Punjab keeps sabotaging their efforts.
Tactical Questions Over Suryansh Shedge’s Role
The batting of Punjab still stands out as one of the strengths. Arya and Prabhsimran opened the innings in an aggressive manner, while Cooper Connolly and Iyer offered stability to the middle order.
However, Shedge’s unbeaten 21 runs in only eight deliveries again gave rise to new doubts. This boy already played a quick fifty in the current season, but he continues to bat at the seventh position. With Stoinis and Shashank not doing well, Shedge’s promotion to open the innings for Punjab would make sense.
