No waiting till the end of the World Cup for saying goodbye, the year took another turn towards the personal. In the beginning itself, five international cricketers – Usman Khawaja, Kane Richardson, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Rassie van der Dussen, and Rubel Hossain – decided to say goodbye to international cricket. Each retirement was accompanied by a personal reason. While some decided to retire while at the top of their game, others retired due to lack of selections. Regardless of their reasons, however, each will definitely have had an impact on his team, with statistics and memorable moments in tow.
These decisions were made not for any one particular occasion, but rather because of a change in attitude. Issues like fitness problems, team strategies, and emergence of young talent influenced these decisions. It is also notable that each one decided to retire on his own time frame. That makes 2026 less dramatic, but more personal in its departures.
Usman Khawaja (Australia)
Usman Khawaja called time on his Test career after playing the fifth Ashes Test in January 2026. In 88 Test appearances, Khawaja scored 6,229 runs with a strike rate of 42.95 and hit 16 centuries. Additionally, he amassed 1,554 runs in ODI cricket in 40 appearances. While Khawaja began his Test career as an Ashes player, he retired one as well. Known for calm batting, he rebuilt his career late. His retirement followed a fitting full-circle moment rather than decline.
Sarfaraz Ahmed (Pakistan)
March 15 saw Sarfaraz Ahmed announce his retirement from cricket after a 19-year long career. In total, he scored 6,164 runs in 54 Test matches, 117 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 61 T20 internationals. As captain of the team, Sarfaraz was instrumental in securing the ICC Champions Trophy for Pakistan in 2017. Under his captaincy, Pakistan reached the number one position in T20Is. The announcement came through the PCB, marking the end of a long leadership phase.
Rassie van der Dussen (South Africa)
Van der Dussen bid adieu to his career on April 2. Van der Dussen entered cricket late in his life but did not take time to make an impression. He amassed 2,657 runs across 71 ODIs, scoring six hundreds. In addition to that, he contributed 1,406 runs in 57 T20Is and 905 runs in 18 Test matches. His career showed consistency rather than flash.
Kane Richardson (Australia)
Richardson hung up his boots in January 2026 following a career that spanned 17 years. Richardson had represented his country in 25 One Day Internationals and 36 Twenty20 Internationals, taking a total of 84 wickets. Injury had hindered his progress to some extent, though his contributions in white ball cricket were noteworthy. The retirement reflected a gradual phase-out rather than a sudden stop.
Rubel Hossain (Bangladesh)
Rubel Hossain announced retirement after years away from international cricket. He played 27 Tests, 104 ODIs, and 28 T20Is, taking 193 wickets. His last match came in 2021.
Reflecting on his exit after a 16-year journey marked by key match-winning spells ,he said, “The national team is my passion. But at some point, I had to leave international cricket.”
