No run chase ever goes easy while playing against Mumbai Indians. Runs of more than 190 always seem very secure, even in favorable batting conditions. However, there are still some teams that managed to reverse the trend through aggressive batting and proper pace management. Through the years, such chases have been exceptional for many reasons apart from the number of runs that were made. The top most challenging totals chased against MI have proven the evolution of T20 batting.
These matches highlight the change that took place over the years. Runs no longer determine who wins a match on their own anymore. Rather, these teams have chased runs in a very systematic manner. In this context, Punjab Kings have dominated the list significantly, owning multiple entries in this elite list and setting the benchmark for successful pursuits against MI.
Punjab Kings – 204 (1 June 2025, Ahmedabad)
Punjab Kings chased 204 in the year 2025 during Qualifier 2 at Ahmedabad. With an unbeaten 87 from Shreyas Iyer, Punjab Kings managed to score 207 for the loss of five wickets with a few balls remaining. This chase broke a very old record. Until this match, no team had scored more than 200 against MI in the 2nd innings.
Punjab Kings – 196 (16 April 2026, Wankhede)
This was followed by yet another chase by Punjab Kings in 2026 in the Wankhede Stadium. While chasing 196 runs, they managed to score 198/3 in only 16.3 overs. This was mainly due to the efforts of Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer who hit half-centuries in their respective innings. The win came with 21 balls remaining, making it one of the most dominant chases against MI.
Rajasthan Royals – 196 (25 October 2020, Abu Dhabi)
The first franchise to create a benchmark was the Rajasthan Royals in the year 2020, in which it was chasing 196, and finished at 196/2 in just 18.2 overs. The key player was Ben Stokes, who scored an unbeaten 107 runs. The innings combined control and power, sealing an eight-wicket win.
Delhi Capitals – 195 (14 April 2018, Wankhede)
In 2018, Delhi Daredevils needed 195 to win against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium. They scored 195 runs for the loss of three wickets in twenty overs. Jason Roy played brilliantly to score 91* in that match. The win came on the final ball, highlighting a calm finish under pressure.
Rajasthan Royals – 188 (13 April 2019, Wankhede)
The next example from the RR team was from the year 2019. Setting a target of 188 runs, they scored 188/6 within 19.3 overs. Jos Buttler top-scored with 89 runs from only 43 deliveries. The game turned around towards the end but RR managed to win it by the end of the game with three deliveries to spare.
All five run chases collectively show how the approach to T20 batting has developed in front of a tough bowling lineup. Unbeatable totals have been made targets for teams to chase down. And in many ways, it shows that nothing is impossible against the Mumbai Indians lineup.
