After ODI World Cup triumph, Harmanpreet Kaur sets sights on T20 glory

The 50-over World Cup title might have been taken but the real battle lies ahead for the team. The Indian women’s team which has recently won the World cup last year in the ODI format is already thinking of moving on towards the shorter format. Under the guidance of Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, the confidence level is extremely high within the team as this recent victory has done more than win them a trophy. The good performances in the format of T20I include victories over teams such as Sri Lanka and Australia. Now the focus is towards qualifying in the T20 World Cup which takes place in 2026.

The team is currently playing against South Africa and their performance during this series would play an important role in preparing them for the upcoming world cup. Harmanpreet has made it clear that performances here will shape combinations and mindset ahead of the global event.

Talking about the confidence in the team after last year, “I think after the (2025) ODI World Cup (triumph), our team is looking quite confident. Wherever we are going, we are going with a lot of confidence, and we have seen that, playing against Australia.”

The South African Challenge

However, the opposition is far from easy. South Africa brings depth and recent big-match experience, having reached multiple global finals. Harmanpreet acknowledged their strength and the value of facing them now. This series, therefore, becomes a test against quality opposition before the World Cup stage.

Harmanpreet knows about the challenge of facing an experienced team, “The South African team is quite a balanced side. They have very good players. They have good all-rounders who always come up when the team needs them.”

Adaptability to Conditions

On the other hand, getting used to the new surroundings is very important. The pitches in South Africa provide some different aspects than those of India. Already in practice sessions, the players are making their efforts in adapting themselves. Harmanpreet made the observation but in a very positive manner. The focus is on quick adaptation without disrupting momentum.

Speaking about the conditions in South Africa, the Indian women’s team captain said, “The weather is quite similar to India. The only difference is the pitch, but we are getting used to it and hopefully will give our best.”

Strong Focus on T20 World Cup

Most importantly, the end target is very much defined. Each selection, match, and experiment revolves around the T20 World Cup. Harmanpreet stressed the importance of using this phase wisely. The team management is also prioritising giving opportunities to players to ensure readiness.

Harmanpreet is confident about their team’s chances and preparations for the all important T20 World Cup as she said, “Hopefully, we will play our best cricket here as well. And I think it’s a great opportunity for us before the (T20) World Cup to (make it) all come together and play our best cricket.”

Essentially, India’s strategy is well thought out and future-oriented. The confidence gained from the victory in ODI sets the platform. Now, the task at hand is to transform that confidence into another world cup.
