Time is running out in an effort to see one of the most dramatic turnarounds in the history of football. Neymar has just weeks left to show he can compete at the highest level as Brazil national team manager Carlo Ancelotti considers his fitness prior to the FIFA World Cup. With Neymar now 34 years old and coming back from a lengthy layoff due to injury, his spot on the squad is anything but assured. However, it’s not impossible either.
Ancelotti has made his stance clear and firm. The message is simple – fitness first, everything else later. Selection will depend only on physical readiness, not reputation.
Ancelotti said, while stressing about Neymar that, “He is capable of getting back to 100%” ; “still has two months to show that he has what it takes.”
Ancelotti Signals Flexibility Over Upcoming Decision
However, the tone coming from the Brazilian camp does not come across as disrespectful. Ancelotti keeps acknowledging the talent and achievements of Neymar. He has continued to stress that as long as the forward meets certain criteria, he will be in the running for a starting spot. This compromise makes sense since there are two sides to this situation.
On one hand, Brazil cannot afford to take an underprepared athlete to a tough competition. However, excluding a winner also comes with its disadvantages. Neymar’s supporters have shown their loyalty by shouting his name even when Brazil lost to France recently. Despite this show of fans’ confidence, Ancelotti has not allowed his emotions to dictate his choices.
Qualitative Analysis of a Legend
The physical and symbolic problem lies with Neymar. Neymar was last seen playing for Brazil in October 2023, suffering from a significant knee injury. Surgery on the said injury had to be performed multiple times, including one in December. Since then, the recovery process has been relatively successful but slow.
However, there are evident signs that indicate recovery. Neymar is back to scoring goals and slowly getting more playing time. Improvement in game play and involvement have also been noticed by the coaching staff. Still, there are reservations about his stamina in the match.
Carlo Ancelotti is hopeful for his come-back as he said, “Neymar has come back well and is scoring goals. I could use him more centrally, closer to goal, as he’s playing now”.
Essentially, Neymar will not be remembered by previous excellence anymore. He can still take pride in his 79 goals at the international level and leave them as an eternal mark on his resume. However, for selection, he needs to show something more. The next few weeks will reveal if he can cope with endurance and rhythm.
