During the 3rd one day international against Sri Lanka, Babar Azam of Pakistan earned the wrath of a judgment he may not have wanted to be at the receiving end of in the first place. Struck with the venerable ICC’s code of conduct breach, the celebrated right hander came in for heavy criticism in the one day international. The reason? In what was a clearly frustrated gesture in which he hit the stumps with his cricket bat after getting dismissed in the limited overs game, a reaction an experienced and established player of the sport should ideally have avoided, the 31-year-old with north of 6,500 runs earned – and rightly so- a penalty.
That was 10 percent of the match fees.
A leading news site titled Greater Kashmir, happened to report the following with regards to the incident and shared:
“Babar Azam admitted to the offence, accepted the sanction, negating the need for a formal hearing!”
Good for the Pakistan batter, right?
But that being said, it ought to be noted what constitutes the offence in this regard, or, establishes the offence:
The man whose cover drive is spoken so highly of breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct that relates to abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.
