Premier League 2019-20: Fixtures and Predictions | Gameweek 34

While the title has been decided in Liverpool’s favour, the Premier League still has many stories and subplots to unveil in the last five rounds of fixtures.

The top four race is getting hotter with Leicester, Chelsea, Manchester United and Wolves fighting for two places.

Arsenal, Tottenham and Sheffield United are still in with an outside chance but they seem to be jostling for a spot in next season’s Europa League at the moment.

The relegation dogfight has been more intriguing than ever.

Only three teams will go down but at the moment four sides are looking like Championship teams.

The bottom four’s inability to even get a point on board at the moment has been keeping the relegation battle interesting.

Brighton have built a considerable gap between them and the bottom three, and four points in their last two games have also lifted West Ham, who still need a few more results to guarantee safety.

Without further ado, let’s see what gameweek 34 of the Premier League has in store for us.

Crystal Palace vs Chelsea (Prediction 0-2):

Three defeats on the trot have more or less killed any hopes Crystal Palace had of making a late-season move to finish in the European spots.

With no threat of relegation or a chance of making it into Europe, the Eagles are in danger of watching their campaign end on a whimper due to the players relaxing.

Palace manager Roy Hodgson is desperate to see a performance from his players but they have a motivated Chelsea visiting Selhurst Park on Tuesday night.

Contrary to Crystal Palace, Chelsea have a lot to play for in the last five Premier League games of the season. They bounced back from their defeat at West Ham with a home win over Watford.

But with Manchester United showing no signs of slowing down, Chelsea will remain wary of them in the top four race with only two points separating the two teams.

The Blues will look to return from south London with all three points and move up to the third place for the time being. With Palace struggling for form, Chelsea are expected to post an away win.

Watford vs Norwich City (Prediction 2-1):

Four defeats in their last five Premier League games have very much left Watford gasping for breath in the relegation dogfight.

But they still have their heads over the water in 17th and have a point’s lead over the teams in the relegation zone.

It tells something about the teams in the bottom three that Watford are still above them.

But the Hornets cannot depend on the poor performances of Aston Villa and Bournemouth until the end of the season to maintain their Premier League status for next term.

A home fixture against bottom-placed Norwich presents them with an opportunity to win a crucial three points.

While mathematically they are still in with a chance, Norwich seem destined for the Championship next season.

A defeat at home to Brighton on Saturday further pushed them towards relegation.

The Canaries have lost their last five Premier League games and have rarely looked like even taking a point in recent weeks.

A Watford win will come as a boost for the home team while further pushing Norwich into the relegation quagmire.

Arsenal vs Leicester City (Prediction 2-0):

After a poor start to Project Restart, Arsenal have found their groove with three wins on the trot in the Premier League.

Their 2-0 victory over Wolves away from home on Saturday was particularly engaging as they showed a rare maturity in their performance.

While Mikel Arteta has still not given up on the hopes of making it into next season’s Champions League, playing in the Europa League remains the more realistic target and he will hope his side continue to hold on their recent form and produce a solid performance at home when Leicester visit them at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.

Leicester arrested some of their alarming decline in form with a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace at the weekend.

While the result was great, the performance lacked their usual fluency and Brendan Rodgers will be aware that taking on an in-form Arsenal away from home will be a challenge for his side.

The Foxes, who are third in the Premier League table, still have a three-point lead over Manchester United in fifth.

But with the Red Devils showing imperious form, Leicester do not have much margin for error in the last five league games.

With Arsenal picking up speed and Leicester still looking patchy, the Gunners are now favourites to beat the Foxes at the Emirates.

Manchester City vs Newcastle United (Prediction 3-0):

While Liverpool have been imperious on their road to the Premier League title this season, Manchester City defence of their league title has been nothing less than shambolic.

They have lost nine times in the Premier League this season, more than teams such as Manchester United, Wolves and Arsenal.

Their 1-0 defeat at Southampton came as a sobering reminder of their frailties this season, following a 4-0 win over champions Liverpool.

Pep Guardiola will be looking for a strong reaction from his players when they host Newcastle at the Etihad on Wednesday.

Two wins and two draws since the campaign resume have helped Newcastle to stay away from a relegation dogfight towards the end of the season.

The Magpies have looked solid in recent weeks and Steve Bruce has earned praise for his work with the Newcastle squad.

However, a visit to the Etihad to take on a wounded Manchester City is likely to be a tough ask.

Newcastle will be happy with a point but Manchester City start as favourites to get back to winning ways.

Sheffield United vs Wolves (Prediction 1-1):

Sheffield United gave their European hopes a boost with a win over Tottenham at home last week but only earned a point at home against Burnley in the next game.

They are still in with a chance of playing in Europe next season but need a result against Wolves at Bramall Lane on Wednesday.

The game has now shaped up into a European six-pointer, something many wouldn’t have predicted at the start of the season.

Wolves’ good run of form came to a jarring halt with a defeat at home to Arsenal.

They are now five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea and have seen their margin for error diminish dramatically in the race to finish in the Champions League spots.

A visit to Sheffield United has come at a crucial juncture for the side and they are aware that anything less than a win is likely to further dent their hopes.

However, none of them start as favourites to win and the likely scenario is that they will share the points.

West Ham vs Burnley (Prediction 1-1):

Four points from their last two league games have arrived as a much-needed boost in West Ham’s attempt to stay in the Premier League this season.

David Moyes has managed to arrest an alarming decline in form, and the Hammers now have a four-point cushion over the relegation zone with five games left in the season.

But the West Ham manager will be acutely aware that his side will need a few more points to stay afloat and eliminate the need for them to depend on the sides below them to continue to drop points.

Burnley resumed Project Restart with a 5-0 drubbing at Manchester United and have won two and drawn one of their next three Premier League games. The Clarets are now looking to finish in the top half of the season by ending their campaign strongly.

A visit to the London Stadium awaits them on Wednesday against a West Ham side, who are in the hunt for more points. Both teams are unlikely to mind a draw from this game.

Brighton vs Liverpool (Prediction 0-2):

Given the abject form of the teams in the bottom four, Brighton’s 1-0 win at Norwich City on Saturday could be enough for Graham Potter’s side to survive in the Premier League for another season.

With 36 points in the bag, Brighton would be reasonably sure of saving their top tier status and would be happy that they have the points with them as the Seagulls will be playing Liverpool and Manchester City in back-to-back Premier League games at home.

Liverpool made hard work of Aston Villa on Sunday but eventually won 2-0. With the title in the bag, Jurgen Klopp is desperate to see his side not drop their performance levels in the last leg of the season.

The Liverpool manager is also likely to try out some of his squad players in preparation for next season. But the Reds are expected to have too much for Brighton and are favourites to win all three points at the Amex Stadium.

Bournemouth vs Tottenham Hotspur (Prediction 0-1):

Bournemouth have been on a free fall for a while. They have lost seven of their last eight Premier League games (five of them on the trot) and are 19th in the league table. But they are still just a point away from safety as Watford, in 17th, have not done much either for a while.

However, it is hard to spot where their next point is coming from given their next three games – Tottenham and Leicester at home and Manchester City away.

Jose Mourinho’s side have also been struggling and despite beating Everton at home on Monday night, Tottenham looked bereft of any invention on the pitch. But Mourinho will take the three points, which kept their hopes of qualifying for Europe alive for the time being.

The Tottenham manager is aware that his side will need to take full advantage of a Bournemouth side bereft of any confidence and win at the Vitality Stadium on Thursday. Given the Cherries form, Tottenham start out as the favourites for three points.

Everton vs Southampton (Prediction 1-1):

Everton’s hopes of making it into next season’s Europa League are fast evaporating after their 1-0 defeat to Tottenham on Monday night. Carlo Ancelotti is looking forward to strengthening his squad when the transfer window opens but is keen to get a tune out of his current team for the remainder of the season.

The Italian will take a top-half finish for the Toffees as things stand, and is in the hunt for points in the last five Premier League games of the campaign.

Southampton come visiting Goodison Park on Thursday and they are arriving at the game on the back of a 1-0 win over last season’s champions Manchester City.

The Saints have looked buoyant since the campaign resumed and are looking at a strong finish to the season. Southampton’s work rate has been their feature and helped them to get out of their early-season dire form. They will be confident of getting at least a point from the Premier League fixture against Everton.

Aston Villa vs Manchester United (Prediction 0-3):

Aston Villa have lost seven of their last nine Premier League games and currently 18th in the league table with 27 points. While they are still just a point of safety, they have not looked like getting a win from anywhere for quite a while and have looked and played like a team destined for relegation.

Dean Smith’s side are desperate to get a positive result but will be hosting a rampaging Manchester United side at Villa Park on Thursday night.

Manchester United are on an unbeaten run of 16 games in all competitions and have not tasted defeat in the Premier League in their last nine fixtures.

They have scored eleven goals in their last three Premier League games and have been swatting away sides with their performances.

They arrive at Villa Park on Thursday night as favourites to win and will hope to further their top-four hopes with three more points.

Villa kept Liverpool at bay for large parts of the game at Anfield on Sunday but any result other than a Manchester United win would be a shock.
