Paris Saint-Germain have made some amazing signings in the last few years. Players such as Neymar Jr, Kylian Mbappe, Angel di Maria, Marco Verratti, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani have all proved to be great signings for the Ligue 1 champions.
On the other hand, the likes of Julian Draxler, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Leandro Paredes have disappointed for the Parisian club.
The amount of money spent by Paris Saint-Germain on transfers in recent years is one of the highest amongst clubs all around the world. The squad assembled by PSG is one of the best across Europe and the world but still, they are far from winning the Champions League which is their ultimate target.
So, let’s have a look at three players PSG might try to bring to Paris in order to get their hands on the elusive Champions League title.
#1 Mauro Icardi
Mauro Icardi is one of the best strikers in the world at present, if not the best. Icardi’s goalscoring record for Inter Milan is as good as it can get. He scored 111 times for the Serie A giants in 188 games and was the Nerazzurri captain until the 2018-19 season. Since joining Paris Saint-Germain in a season-long loan move from Inter Milan last summer, the Argentine has already scored 12 times in 20 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit.
Antonio Conte, who replaced Luciano Spalletti as Inter’s manager, wasn’t keen on the striker because of his off-field tantrums and decided to let go his captain on a loan deal. According to various French journalists, Icardi is being touted as the player to replace Edinson Cavani, who will be leaving PSG at the start of next season.
Icardi is 27 years old with his best years as a striker yet to come. He possesses a good technique and mainly operates inside the penalty box. As a striker, his hold up plays are really good and he can score with the fewest of touches. Inter Milan are looking for a free of around €65-70 million to get the deal over the line as they clearly see no future of him at the San Siro.
#2 Ismael Bennacer
Ismael Bennacer has been one of the few shining lights for AC Milan this season after joining the Rossoneri from Empoli last summer. The Algeria international is considered to be one of the top midfield talents in the world. The 22-year-old can be deployed in different roles in the middle of the park but his preferred position is that of a defensive midfielder.
Bennacer is blessed with good speed, composure on the ball and terrific dribbling skills. He is well known for turning defence into attack and is always looking forward to finding a teammate rather than playing it sideways.
Paris Saint-Germain are actively looking to get his services after monitoring him this year. Various media outlets value him for around €30 million after a great season, and PSG should be ready to splash at least that amount to have any chance of convincing AC Milan to part ways with Ismael Bennacer. Regardless of the price, AC Milan are expected to lose him at the end of the season, and that might not be a good thing for the fallen Italian giants.
#3 Alex Telles
Alex Telles is regarded as on the best-attacking left-backs in Europe and has certainly caught the eye of Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo Araujo. The Brazilian has plenty of pace and skill, and also possesses a wand of a left-foot which has created many a goal in Porto colours.
He has scored 8 times in 23 games and also has 5 assists to his name in the present campaign – remarkable numbers for a defender. PSG want him to replace the outgoing Layvin Kurzawa, who will be a free agent at the end of the current season. If he indeed joins the Ligue 1 giants, Telles will be expected to compete with Juan Bernat for a place in the starting XI.
The 27-year-old has refused to sign a new deal with Porto, and with his current contract running until 2021, the Portuguese outfit are not willing to lose him for free next season. Telles is rumoured to be available for €25-30 million.
Paris Saint-Germain dominate Ligue 1 almost every year and there’s a high chance that they will win the league title with games to spare as they have very little competition domestically. However, with these signings, PSG can challenge in a much better way in Europe and will look more likely to win the Champions League.
